Antique Georgian 18 carat gold and enamel Memorial, hair and skull ring. Made circa 1820. US size 6 3/4. Shank of the ring in the form of overlapping branches, that divide into 3 at each shoulder, where they join the oval, flower-shaped bezel. THe top has an oval reserve in which a skull rests on a bed of the beloved''s tightly woven hair. The border is enamelled in black with gold letters:IN MEMORY OF. According to Shirley Bury in her book on rings, page 47, such rings were often made for stock and then inscribed according to the needs/wishes of the purchaser. This particular ring has not been inscribed with name or date of the deceased. Ring is in very good condition especially considering the age.
