CIRCA 1650 GERMAN BROADSWORD, WALOON PATTERN SWORD #SW4432
An excellent example of a very sought after early pattern broadsword.
Perfect Waloon form hilt in excellent condition (no cracks, repairs or losses) with most of its original silvering intact. Two large pierced dish counterguards, forward quillon, thumb ring, forged and chiseled bars and decorative knops. Large spherical pommel nicely chiseled. Wood grip with original twisted copper wire wraps and Turk’s head ferrules (one missing).
Straight double edged blade in fair condition with peppering is deeply stamped “IOHAN” with the Running Wolf of SOLINGEN, both sides. Blade is about 31.5” long, sword is about 38” overall.
A very similar sword is pictured in the book “Swords and Blades of the American Revolution” by Neumann plate 33S.
