SOLD Antique 17th -18th century Northern Indian Islamic Mughal sword Talwar - Tulwar with an early 17th century European blade. DETAILS: A gold gild copper (Tombak) hilt of typical 17th century Northern Indian Islamic type, with a bellied grip that runs down to form short quillons, with a large saucer – shaped pommel. A broad curved blade with four narrow fullers below the spine, the upper two terminating at the base of the yelmen, the other meeting at a point below the blade tip, deeply struck with 'sickle and eyelash’ markings, associated with 16th/17th century Genoan and Styrian blades. This blade is very similar to the blade of a Tipu Sultan sword, captured at the siege of Seringapatam, which is most likely of 17th century Hungarian -Transylvanian origin. Also, these types of blades with such markings are characteristic for 16/17th century Hungarian Hussar sword blades.

CONDITION: The sword is in good condition considering its age, gold gilding on the hilt worn, and the center of the inner side of the pommel near the grip is damaged.

MEASUREMENTS: Overall length: 90.5 cm (35 5/8 in), length of the blade: 80.5 cm (31 3/4 in).
