EPPA HUNTON. Book signed: Eppa Hunton" on second blank page. History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Death of Elizabeth: Reign of Elizabeth, v. II. by James Anthony Froude, 601p, 5½x7¾. Charles Scribner and Company, New York: 1871. First Edition. Hunton, a former Colonel and Brigadier General of the Virginia militia, was elected to the Virginia convention of 1861, which voted for secession. After serving through its first session, he entered the Confederate Army as Colonel of the 8th Virginia Infantry, with which he first saw action at the battle of First Manassas. After the Battle of Gettysburg, he was promoted and served through the rest of the war as Brigadier General. Following a serious loss at Five Forks in March 1865, he was captured at Sailor's Creek on April 6, 1865 and imprisoned in Fort Warren until July 1865. After the war, Hunton was elected as a Democrat from Virginia to the U.S. House of Representatives (1873-1881) where he was the only Southerner to sit on the electoral commission that decided the disputed Hayes-Tilden election in 1877. He also served in the U.S. Senate (1892-1895) before retiring from public life. Slightly stained on front cover. Otherwise, fine condition. For more information contact 864-583-4784
