Wabi sabi zen buddhist travelling altar from Late Edo to Early Meiji Periods c. 1870-1890. Probably owned by a samurai who carried it with him to perform rites and prayers as a travelling shrine. Simple wood elegantly lacquered with many layers of black lacquer and with copper metal fittings and hinges. Inside opens to gold leaf lacquered inside where a buddhist deity resided. Slight lacquer wear in the back on the bottom and on the top front rim. very affordable. $390 (h:45cm x w:23cm) Shipping/insurance to usa/western europe $100.
