This is a substantial antique iron Gothic Revival lantern, circa 1900, with a beautiful milk glass cylinder. The chandelier begins with a handsome quatrefoil finial attached to a cone-shaped top, from which descend four bands that join to the body of the lantern. The glass cylinder is encircled by a wide band, which is ornamented with alternating red and dark blue crests. Between the crests are vertical iron bands fastened to the lantern with floret buttons. Each vertical band ends in a spike and is joined to a second iron band by a third strip, which curves smoothly back and forth between the two. This light fixture is in excellent condition, and the glass is also in excellent condition with no cracks or breaks, just the expected fleabites around the rim. The chandelier has been professionally rewired and comes with all the necessary attachments for modern installation. It measures 14" wide, 49" tall to the top of the cluster, and 79" long overall. « Less

These original oil paintings are profoundly influenced by Dr. Al Masri’s unique background in art and archaeology. Inspired by his research in the ancient civilizations, Al More »
These original oil paintings are profoundly influenced by Dr. Al Masri’s unique background in art and archaeology. Inspired by his research in the ancient civilizations, Al Masri’s works reflect the cultural forces that have shaped the Middle East region: Assyrian, Mesopotamian, Sumerian, Persian, African, Egyptian, and Nabatean. His works are abundant with ancient symbols, hieroglyphs, early Arabic writing, cuneiform inscriptions, and ancient icons - sometimes juxtaposed with contemporary themes and symbols taken from the world around him. Modern images such as a playful kite, a whimsically curved palm tree, or a graffiti-like arrow are placed alongside symbols and icons central to ancient civilizations, such as those representing fertility and immortality. The viewer is easily drawn in, attempting to decipher and connect the hidden meanings in his work. The visual interplay of the past and present merges together to create incredibly original and innovative art.Al Masri’s non-traditional medium and technique further emphasize the spirit of the ancients. Hist works are not just painted, but carved and sculptural in appearance. In lieu of a canvas, he works on a specially prepared wooden panel. Using wood carving tools, he skillfully carves his images and designs, resulting in works that closely resemble ancient tablets or carvings in both texture and appearance. His masterful use of oil paint with colors rich in warm earth tones, combined with fresh and confident brushstrokes, complete the unconventional and powerful works of art.Untitled AJ. 069Origin: Jordan Collection: Contempo « Less

The Ancient Egyptians believed the wedjat eye was the most powerful protection against evil. Ever-vigilant against bad luck and misfortune, the symbolic eye of the god Horus More »
The Ancient Egyptians believed the wedjat eye was the most powerful protection against evil. Ever-vigilant against bad luck and misfortune, the symbolic eye of the god Horus was worn by king and peasant alike. Though the eye was sometimes fashioned in gold and precious stones, it was thought to be at its most powerful when colored blue. The tradition of blue amulets guarding against harm is a very ancient one. Throughout the Mediterranean world today, one sees beads and talismans of bright blue, which are meant to avert the evil eye of bad luck. In Egypt, peasants dip the palm of their hands in blue paint and press their palms against the sides of their houses. When the Egyptian Empire was at its glorious height, this faience eye of the god Horus was worn by some long-forgotten person to bring good fortune and luck. Much has changed in the world since then, but the power of this talisman remains strong and benevolent as always. Whoever wears it today in its golden frame will surely benefit from its ancient magic as well. - (FJ.6890Y) « Less

Bronze Centenionalis of Emperor Constantius II - C.7010Origin: Minted in Constantinople Circa: 348 AD to 361 AD Collection: Numismatics Style: Roman Medium: Bronze Flavius More »
Bronze Centenionalis of Emperor Constantius II - C.7010Origin: Minted in Constantinople Circa: 348 AD to 361 AD Collection: Numismatics Style: Roman Medium: Bronze Flavius Julius Constantius was born on August 7, 317 to Fausta and Constantine the Great. He became Caesar on November 8, 324 and Augustus on September 9, 337 after his father's death. He received the eastern provinces in the division of the Empire with his brothers Constans and Constantine II. He spent much of his reign warring with the Sassanian Empire under Sapor II, but suppressed Magnentius, the murderer of Constans, to become the sole Augustus in August of 353. He died of illness on November 3, 361 near Tarsus while marching to suppress Julian II, who had declared himself Augustus in early 360. Like his father before him, Constantius II played a prominent role in the early history of the Christian Church. He was a tolerant and just ruler, although he stifled any possible competitors to his power. « Less
