Antique Amritsar rug, India, circa 1900 - This magnificent antique Amritstar harks back to the masterpieces of Mughal and Safavid times, of which it is a truly worthy descendant. Superbly detailed palmettes, cloudbands, and thin vines repeat across the burgundy-magenta ground in the measured, swaying rhythms of classical design. The cocoa and green tones of the palmettes predominate in the ground color of the border, enclosing the field with an effective but reserved contrast.
