Antique Farahan, Persia, late nineteenth centuryIn place of the medallion design customary on fine antique Farahans, this extraordinary example has an allover design of flame palmettes and Harshang or ‘crab’ flowers derived from classical Persian and Caucasian carpets. The drawing is elegant yet slightly tribal and exciting, but what really makes this carpet so exquisite is the balance between the soft apricot tones of the field and the deep sage green ground. This color juxtaposition is reversed in the border where a stunning interlacing arabesque vinescroll in green is set against a creamy pale apricot ground. Rarely do color and design interact with such beauty and synergy.
