Antique Ghiordes, Turkey, late nineteenth century. This arresting antique Ghiordes has a grand, allover design adapted from classical Caucasian dragon carpets. Across a soft terracotta ground, a dynamic network of broad, serrated arabesques in pale gold and green repeats in zig-zag configuration. Finer floral detail fills the various elements of the network, as well as the intervening areas of the ground. The main border has a ‘millefiori’ pattern of tiny rosettes and flowers, providing an effective contrast to the bolder scale and graphics of the field. The delicacy of the color is nicely complemented by the lustrous quality of the soft wool pile.
