Antique Kerman, Persia, late nineteenth century
A graceful tree of life design unfolds within an open tan field enclosed by dark blue flowering cornerpieces on this supremely elegant and reserved antique Kerman. The various flowers blossom forth from the tree in a lovely array colors - soft reds, lavender, pale, blues and greens, and tans. These tones recur in the cornerpieces along with a rich saffron shade. The vinescroll borders are narrow and simple, deferring to the main design of the field. Though ornamental, the field is also pictorial, depicting as it does a garden-like scene of paradise.
