Antique Khotan Oriental Rug, early twentieth century - At times the great Weavers of the Khotan region set aside the ornamental approach to carpet design in favor of the pictorial, as in this extremely charming antique piece. Here we see a prospect of a rural setting with a mountainous vista serving as a backdrop to the village of small houses and yurts or tents fronting onto a small lake or pool. Still, the ornamental element comes through in the coloration of soft purples, apricots, reds and oranges. These may not be realistic in a landscape setting, but they certainly are a lovely decorative touch.
