Antique Khotan, east Turkestan, early twentieth centuryAn allover Herati design of Persian origin comprises the field of this elegant antique Khotan. The rendering of the design, however, is strongly abstract and geometric, giving it a distinctive Khotan quality. The inner borders of flowers and palmettes also look to more westerly Oriental regions, although the hooked cartouches of the main border have a more Turkoman feel. Despite its varied background the uniform and restrained palette used across the entire carpet imparts a unified decorative impression to the piece as a whole.
