Antique Khotan carpet, East Turkestan, late nineteenth centuryWith a pattern going back to the earliest known carpet designs, this impressive antique Khotan has rows of quartered volute medallions set against a golden field. Narrow borders with hooked motifs, no less atavistic in derivation, furnish an appropriate frame for the field, allowing it to predominate in the overall effect of the piece. As Khotans go, this example is incomaparable.
