Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, late nineteenth century A classic East Turkestan design of large and small golden medallions floats amidst a warm red field on this stately antique Khotan. The larger scale and solid form of the central medallions are countered by the smaller openwork medallions to either side. A system of narrow borders of Khotan type frames the field – with a diagonal meander on the inside and a cloud medallion on the exterior. The crisp drawing and forceful geometry of the design represent the Khotan tradition at its best.
