It is an old duster made from the horsehair and the bamboo stalk. Charming and full of Zen spirits, if only for decoration in the scholar's chamber. Or, of course being actually used to expel the annoying insects. Somtimes it was also a religious instrument holding by a Daoist monk to expell the devils.
