Totemic phallus sumptuous lacquered wood
Japan Edo period
A well formed wooden phallus wrapped in a woven cloth pouch and enclosed in a period Kiri-wood box with gold maki-e title
signed on the inside
fine condition. Possibly a fertility offering,
it may have also been an item made for pleasure.
It is of light wood covered in lacquer, and has a fine soft sheen.
Inside the box is written Purchased the First Year of Koka (1844),
held by Toyohiko.
