Antique 22carat gold loop earrings with exquisite fine geometric ornament. Made Tamil Nadu, India, 19th - early 20th century. Length of earring is 7/8 inches. Width is a little over 1/2 inch. Weight is 7.4grams. Beautiful loops with filigree borders. One side of earring is adorned with sculptural geometric shapes - pyramids, globes and granulation of various sizes. Two sides have tiny extentions -with minute detail, scarcely visible to the naked eye. One of them serves as the terminal of a tiny screw. WHen undone, the earring opens. (see ''photos). Good condition. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. In her book on Indian earrings, page 231, Waltraud Ganguly explains that the design is a snake, symbol of eternity (with it''s tail in it''s mouth). These earrings, called Ananthamudichu are ''practically extinct'' today. ''They need only one hinge; the screw-head is a part of the geometrical decoration and is not detectable as such when closed.'' She also tells us that the Victoria and Albert Museum, London owns a pair of Ananthamudichu, donated in 1851 to the exhibition of that year. Status: For Sale Reference#: 3936 Condition: good Year: 1890 Title: ANTIQUE 22K GOLD LOOP EARRINGS FINE SCULPTURE DESIGN « Less

Mayan Plate - PF.2910, Origin: Guatemala, Circa: 300 AD to 900 AD, Dimensions: 15" (38.1cm) high, Catalogue: V15, Collection: Pre-Columbian, Medium: Terracotta. This large Mayan plate portrays an elaborately decorated man wearing a feathered headdress, into which a bird is speaking. This graceful figure is encircled by hieroglyphs that accent the circumference of the plate. He stands with austere confidence, holding a weapon-like object. In Mayan civilization such plates were essential items because the plates were often decorated with royal portraiture of a ruler the plates, thus, describe reigning eras of rulers who were considered as semi-divine beings with royal heritage and spiritual power the figure on the Mayan plate displays numerous signs of such status and power he shows cranial deformation, a sign of noble beauty, and wears elaborate headdress. He also wears jade ear spools and fancy clothing. The most interesting point of this plate, however, is the act of communication between the ruler and the bird-- perhaps one of many Mayan gods. The ruler's gesture and the marks that resemble speech scroll from the bird’s open beak signify communication, the ruler's spiritual power of interacting with a god. The headdress was associated with gods in Mayan civilization and it sometimes took shapes of various gods. Perhaps some rulers communicated with gods through their headdress. The glyphs around the plate perhaps convey the ruler's name and the dales of his reigning era. As such usage of hieroglyphs illustrate, the Mayans had extremely complex hieroglyphic system of names, dates, and cosmos. Like pages of a book, this beautiful plate describes a period in history with elegant lines, colors, shapes, and hieroglyphs. « Less

Publius Septimius Geta was Roman emperor from 209 to More »
Origin: Mediterranean
Circa: 209 AD to 212 AD
Collection: Jewelry
Style: Roman Coin Pendant
Medium: Silver and Gold
Publius Septimius Geta was Roman emperor from 209 to 212, jointly with his father, Septimius Severus (reigned 193-211), and his brother, Caracalla (reigned 198-217). The younger son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna, he was given the title “Caesar” in 198, when the title “Augustus” was bestowed upon his elder brother Caracalla, effectively sharing command with their father. In 209, Geta was himself made an Augustus, joining the ranks of his father and brother. The furious rivalry that developed between the brothers remained concealed from public view as long as their father lived; but after Severus' death at Eboracum (modern York, England) in February 211, the brothers formed separate military factions. Civil war threatened until February 212, when Caracalla had Geta murdered in their mother's arms in her apartment at the imperial palace. The splendor of the precious metals is allowed to shine in this pendant. The natural hues of the silver and gold complement each other. In this pendant, the present and the past combine. The classical form of the modern pendant enhances the timeless beauty and majesty of the ancient coin. To wear this pendant is to reconnect with the past while continuing to look stylish in the present. - (FJ.7095) « Less

circa: 2000 width: 47 height: 38 length: 22 This gorgeous walnut wine cabinet was recently English-made by hand as a reproduction of a Georgian period antique. Every aspect of the piece, from the techniques employed to the materials used, boasts the utmost in quality. The burl walnut, for instance, which was treated to an elaborate finishing process, displays a deep, lustrous complexion and a remarkably pronounced grain, while the walnut crossbanding and solid brass hardware make a particularly lovely contrast. The pulls are Regency style lion heads, while the turned columns end in sturdy bun feet such as were popular throughout the 19th century. The top of this wine cabinet opens to reveal a small bar area with two compartments for storing, perhaps, bottles in use, while the center holds a removable brass bowl for ice. The interior contains glass racks on the left and bottle racks on the right, while each door features a brass gallery that will hold in thin bottles or towels. Of course, because this wine cabinet was carefully handmade by a third-generation cabinetmaker, it is incredibly sturdy and will be sure to last for generations to come. « Less
