This is a museum quality and large amber glazed pouch ewer from the Liao Dynasty (907-1125). Tall and handsome, it stands on a flat splay foot rising upwards to a bulging side body with a long vertical spout with foliated mouth rim and a rounded handle instead of the pinch handle. The whole pouch ewer is coated with dark amber glaze on a white colour slip stopping short of the splay foot rim showing the red colour stoneware. The stoneware pouch ewer simulates a leather form of the pouch.

This is a rare find for it large size as well as for it moulding and deeply incised motif. It shows the skill and craftsmanship of the potter. The average height of the Liao dynasty pouch ewer is about 27cm. The standard pouch ewer generally is without motif or motif of either an impressed or peony flowers with very minimal moulding. For this pouch ewer, the top part around the neck and rounded handle has been skillfully moulded with trimming and a tassel opposite the neck. On the two side of the pouch, a systematical phoenix has been skillfully incised. The head and the wing shows that of the phoenix but the body has been creatively incised with that of a peony sprays which is a typical hallmark on most Liao ceramics.

There is no repair or restoration, some abrasion, glaze fritting, firing and manufacturing faults (picture 5). There is some expected degradation, chips & minor losses as a consequence of long period of burial and subsequent cleaning. Also a slight depression on one of the phoenix tail section.

The dimension of the Pouch Ewer: The Height is 37.cm, Width is 16.3cm and the Length is 17.3cm.
