Alexander III was born in 356 B.C. to king Philip II of Macedon and Olympias. Raised as a crown prince and tutored by the Greek philosopher Aristotle, Alexander was made king upon his father's assassination against a background of dynastic intrigue. His extraordinary military ability, shrewd judgment and forceful character helped him maintain control, and in early 334 he led a grand army of some 50,000 across the Hellespont in a war of revenge against Persia. Alexander's conquests, from Egypt to India, consolidated Greek power in much of the known world, and the consequent spread of Hellenistic culture is still evident in some areas to this day. On this drachma he is depicted as Hercules wearing the skin of the Nemean lion-- a most suitable image for a young man whose accomplishments rivaled even those of the mythical hero. - (FJ.6012)
