The scenes of merriment and sensuality that adorn this rare vessel show the Roman's appreciation for the pleasures of this life. The subject matter most likely links the vessel to the worship of the wine god Dionysos; and perhaps to the marriage ritual, where such scenes could serve an instructional purpose.
