Antique 19th Century Tibetan Buddhist Thangka of Bodhisattva 'Avalokiteshvara' A Manifestation of Amitābha Buddha; + 19th C. Antique Tibetan Lacquered Cabinet, Bench, & Enameled Brass Cloissone Bowl
Price: $4500.00
This beautifully painted 19th Century Tibetan Thangka- a Tibetan painting traditionally made using organic dyes on finely woven cloth of high-grade materials, in this case linen- sits in a wonderfully elegant frame worthy of the piece it protects. Within the outer frame sits a 3-Dimensional raised mat board with a fine hand-woven silk cloth decorated with a perfectly designed gold-gilded pattern, a lovely harmonious match for the Thangka displayed within its borders.

The central figure of this Thangka is the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara who is an earthly manifestation of the celestial Amitābha Buddha, the central revered figure in Pure Land Buddhism. Avalokiteshvara serves as the guardian on and of Earth in this current period between the life of Shakyamuni, The Original Buddha (Siddartha Gautama), and the appearance of the Future Buddha, 'Maitreya' (referred to as 'Ajita' in the Lotus and Amitābha Sutras). Amitābha, translated as 'Infinite Light,' is accordingly known as 'The Buddha of Immeasurable Life and Light' and is one of the most important Buddhist figures across many sects of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, in addition to the Pure Land Buddhism especially dedicated to him, making this wonderfully painted (and rather large by common comparison) Thangka of His earthly manifestation, Avalokiteshvara, painted in the proper traditional style with all of the 11 heads given to him by the Original Buddha, not only visually stunning but also a revered and very Holy piece of 19th Century East Asian artwork.

Dimensions: Image= Width 16.5" x Height 24" (inner mat boarder); Total w/ Frame= W 24.5'' x H 31.5"

Condition: The frame likely a later addition, early to mid 20th century perhaps, is in excellent condition- the silk mat appears to be entirely blemish-free and only a few light scratches from age exist on the frame. The Thangka, being at least 120 years old in which time it has traveled quite a distance, is in wonderful condition despite those facts with all of the splendid details clearly visible. Minor wear due to age is confined to very light fading in areas, some lightly discolored stain-spotting (possibly spot-cleaned several decades ago) mostly towards the edges doesn't effect the overall image and are most visible only when closely examined within a short arm's reach; only a single scratch of approx. 1 inch is visible in the bottom left when facing the piece and is also essentially invisible from a standard viewing distance. This Thangka is one of, if not the least, faded/worn/stained piece of its kind that we have had the opportunity to examine. Truly museum quality- not just for its condition and noteworthy size, but most importantly for the detailed and passionate artistry that can only be created by an artist with an unparalleled reverence and respect for the Subject of his craft.
