Offered is a beautiful little etching by Davis F(rancis) Schwartz (American, 1879-1969). Born in Kentucky, Schwartz studied in Ohio & Montreal before beginning a career in art illustration. He worked as an illustrator for newspapers including the Los Angeles Times (after moving to California in 1903), but in 1915 abandoned commercial work for fine art. In 1924, elected as the artist for the State Board of Harbor Commissioners, he came to San Francisco, where he maintained a studio for some 30 years in the famous Ferry Building. His works are held in many public and private collections. This etching depicts China Camp, on the shores of San Pablo Bay, one of the northern reaches of San Francisco Bay. Today it is a state park, but in the 1880s a Chinese shrimping village thrived on the site, housing some 500 people from Canton, China. Pencil signed, lower right. The measurements given below are for the framed piece; the image size is 7" x 9 3/4".
