Was inspired after seeing a painting in an art gallery in New Bedford, MA by Albert Bierstadt. Enlisted in the army in the Civil War. Returned and lived in Fairhaven, MA where he married and raised a family of 5 daughters. A typical luminous painter best known for his smaller canvases, which he called 'my little gems.' This impressive painting by Gifford shimmers with light from the moon and the fire on the shore, where two men have stopped for the evening.
