Henry Orne Rider painting - Sudbury River, Framingham
Price: $2500.00
"Afternoon Light - The Sudbury River at Old Framingham, Mass." by Henry Orne Rider (American, 1860-1943). Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 inches, signed lower right and also signed, titled & dated 1934 on the reverse of the canvas. The painting is offered in the original carved, giltwood artist's frame (also inscribed with the artist's name.) This oil on canvas scene showing a summer landscape with river, lined by tall trees and high grass, beneath a blue sky with white clouds. The river curves, and there are several houses and low hills visible in the distance. Condition is good, with professional touch-up restoration to surface craquelure. Henry Orne Rider (sometimes spelled Ryder) was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of a sea captain. He attended school in Newton and then studied art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Expanding his studies to Europe, he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian in Paris. His paintings were exhibited at the Boston Art Club and at the Newton Club in 1895-6. He was also a teacher of art, becoming a professor at Lasell Junior College near his home in Auburndale, a part of Newton. Rider is best known for his warm and deeply personal portrayals of the rivers in his home environment, such as the River Charles or, as in this example, The Sudbury River.
