Small Folio Print (Conningham 1240)

Published by N. Currier, 25 Spruce Street, New York, between 1838-1856, this print, “The Constitution and the Guerriere… ,” is a lithograph on paper with hand coloring. The print is listed by Conningham as number 1240. The image size is 8 ¼” x 12 ½” (small folio) and it is matted in a vintage black and gold molded frame.

It illustrates the end of the action between the frigate Constitution and the HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812.

“After 30 minutes of battle against ‘Old Ironsides,’ the Guerriere’s hull was much damaged and she was completely unrigged. Upon which she struck her colors, her crew was removed, and she was blown up and sunk. This battle did much to enhance American unity during the War of 1812 where seamen’s rights were a major concern”

This truly beautiful print is from our father's estate collection and it would be an outstanding addition to yours.
