The poster as we know it today is not older than 140 years. This is because one was technically able to produce coloured posters in large editions in the 1870s. Since then, the poster has developed into an independent form of art. The poster as a form of art is an important one with its own principles. For the artist it is a very special form, designed for its long distance effect. Colour, image and technology must all work together to create a work of art that can be understood from far away. It communicates: You are on the street.

Picasso must have felt at home on the street, he understood how to use it's requirements to present his art. The street means something confidant, it means a native country, not only for Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Boudry, but for many others as well. They all used iconographic imagery with contrasting colour in a popular way. Many styles of art have influenced the poster and the poster also has influenced art.

Like Picasso, with his unusual etchings, lithographs and linocuts, other masters like Braque, Chagall, Miro, Giacometti, Dali used these different technologies of artistic expression. Print making is the reproduction of visual graphics:

For lithography an image on a polished slab of Stone
For etching an image on a copper plate, including aquatinte, cold needle etching and Mezzotinto etching
For a woodcut, an image on a slab of Wood
For a linocut, an image on Linoleum
For a silk screen, an image on woven mesh

After the artist gives his final OK, an edition is printed that is restricted to a certain amount of copies. Sometimes there are also special pieces of the edition, marked with E.A. (artist's copy) or H.C. (Hors commerce). The print can be made on different types of paper, by machine or by hand.

The collection shown here includes more then 600 historic pieces and is dominated by famous artists from the classical modern era like Picasso, Matisse, Chagal and Miro. Pop artists like Andy Wahrol, Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine and Tom Wesselmann are also represented.

The collection started in the 1950s, many pieces were produced from studio MOURLOT in Paris.
