Description & Notes

This bowl bears a six-character Qianlong seal mark in iron red, but its shape and pattern suggests that it was made during the late 19th century Guangxu period. Famille rose millefleur, since its inception during the Qianlong reign, is a tour de force of artistic and technical acrobatics: a kaleidescope of hundreds of flowers, in a fantastic maze of colors, and enameling work so fine that flowers overlap each other without the colors mixing. Although not as fine as Qianlong-period millefleur wares, this bowl is still a fine example of this type of famille rose ware, with its colors vivid and enamels contained within outlines. Additional sophistication is exemplified by the black enamel ground and gilt swirling scrolls. Judging by the fine glaze, thin potting, compact paste, and gilt mouth-rim, this bowl is either imperial ware or minyao (folk kiln) of near-imperial quality.

A near-identical example, but with a Guangxu mark, is currently offered for sale by Nicholas Pitcher (former director of Chinese ceramics at Christie's London), priced at £4000.00: http://www.nickpitcher.com/view_item.php?item_id=444
