Of an unusual small size, probably for travel, is this antique Chinese seal chest. All four sides and the top are carved with recessed central rectangular cartouches, and one side slides up to reveal three drawers to hold the collection of document seals and ink pot. The wood is lustrous East Indian rosewood (Pterocarpus indicus) stained to resemble zitan. A brass bale handle at the top serves for carrying the chest and each drawer has a small brass knob. Early Nineteenth Century, approximately four inches square and 4-1/2 inches tall, exclusive of the handle. Each drawer is 2-5/8 inches by 2-1/4 inches. The top and bottom drawers are 11/16 inches deep, while the middle one is one inch deep.
