This pair of Harris Strong tile plaques depict portraits of two Aztec or Mayan warriors. The squeezebag images are glazed in warm oranges and earth tones. They are mounted onto solid walnut slabs. Te backs have stock numbers and the remnants of the early 1960''s yellow paster. The tiles measure 6 inches square and the boards are 10.5 inches square and 1 inch thick. Perfect for above a sofa or credenza. There are four six-inch tiles in the center forming a map ( of where, I don''t know). This is then flanked by 4 images of women. I''m nit sure if they represent the four seasons, or points of the compass. The best part though is the veneered panel it is mounted on. The grain of the woods used is wonderful, and most likely the work of Bill Chaiken. The condition is excellent, with no chips or cracks to the tiles and minimal flakes to the wood. Due to it''s size and weight shipping will be expensive, however pickup in Northern New Jersey is possible. This 7 inch round tile has an embossed figure of a peacock with his tail spread wide. It was made by Helen Greenleaf Lane, and similar examples can be seen in on the cover of Volume 4 of the Encyclopedia od American Art Tile by Norman Karlson, and in Volume 2 of California Tile: The Golden Era 1910-1940. Lane studied pottery at the University of Southern California under Glen Lukens. Her output from her studio in Upland was short, only between 1920-1929.
