Classic coffin-end handle, incised pointed arch drop on bowl back. Length 9 1/4" Shank heavier than the usual coin silver tablespoon. Coffin spoons are very collectable, date 1795-1825 The maker's mark is very clear, C&P in a rectangle. According to Green's "Marks of American Silversmiths" it is probably William Cleveland, Norwich, Ct. and Zanesville, Ohio. and Post though Green offers no cartouche. c. 1805 There is a monogram. The maker's name MOULTON and the words "Mother Goose Silver Ver Goose" are on the reverse. There is also a drop on the back where the shank connects to the bowl, indicating that it is an early spoon. Do you know to whom the reference "Mother Goose Ver Goose."? At the time Moulton was a silversmith in Newburyport, MA. there were many thoughts about the origin of Mother Goose tales. A slightly credible story of the origin of Mother Goose says that she was Elizabeth Foster (Ver)goose, wife of Isaac Vergoose, of Boston, Massachusetts.
