Antique pair of carved oak jesters / troubador musicians. Made in Italy, late 19th century. Approx 14 1/4 inches tall (37cm). Absolutely charming: One figure plays a mandolin; the other a flute. Each figure stands on a very simple, rectangular oak wood block. Wearing standard uniform of a jester or harlequin, complete with bells and buttons and lots of pleats. Collars like sunflowers. Wonderfully detailed caricature faces. The mandolin player with a huge open mouthed smile, stares into the distance; the flautist with exquisite gentle expression on his smiling face and soft eyes. Quality of carving very good. Wood has great, old patina and warm glow after more than 100 years. Condition: the mandolin has the edge of it''s handle missing; the tips of the fingers of the flautist are missing, as is the ''horn'' and bell on one side of his cap. One side of the cap of the mandolin player may be re-attached. The couple more than makes up for these signs of age by their great charm. Japanese carved boxwood brush washer bowl. Probably early 1900''s. Measures approx 4 inches accross. General shape is oval, but has a myriad of finely carved organic forms, some like tentacles of sea anenomes, some floral and foliate, swirling around and about each other, forming bridges and arches. The carving underneath the bowl is even more stupendous than the top and sides. Great detail. Wonderful artistic assymetry and aesthetic style. Very good condition. 18th century (or older) wooden mould for making bricks. Approx 24inches long. Very old wood construction with 2 compartments for packing clay into brick form. Mortar and tenon joints, some old nails. Wood has shrunk with age and is split in parts. Corners are rubbed smoothe and shiny through use and age. A pair of metal loops were added so that this amazing old piece of social history can be used as a hanging shelf. An elaborate hairdo, ritual scarring on cheeks and a lizard climbing a totem-like body. No damage of any sort. Folding fan. 19th century, French Victorian, silk embroidered & ebonised wood, mourning fan - all in black. Each stick is 13inches long. The black ebony wooden sticks are secured by a metal attachement with little buttons that may be ivory or very old wood. The folding fan is made of rich black silk embroidered with black flowers. It is extremely elegant and subtle. Condition is generally very good. One guard needs to be secured to the fabric (easilly done with a spot of glue). The silk and embroidery on the front are in very good condition - no damage of any sort. At the back, the silk is thinner and it has torn in one or two places along the folds.
