Extremely rare sled shaped objet d'art, this piece is inscribed " A relic of the Artic Expedition of 1877." Comprised of a metal frame and wiring the sides are wooden, presumably a relic of the original polar expedition of Henry How gate. After publishing his plan for "polar Colonization" How gate's plan was for an international collaborative effort of related and simultaneous observations of weather and magnetic phenomena in the Arctic. How gate did manage to mount two advance expeditions to the high Artic. An unusual and rare Pre-Columbian necklace of ancient ivory-colored scorpion eggs and ceramic disc beads that were discovered together (it was restrung in Columbia). The multi-strand necklace of alternating scorpion eggs and ceramic beads are strung in a bi-tone arrangement - 4 strands of scorpion eggs alternating with dark reddish brown beads on one side, 4 strands of scorpion eggs alternating with ochre-colored beads on the other that are looped in the center and doubled back to the clasp. It is ingenious to have used scorpion eggs as beads centuries ago. They must have been worn for protection and power as well as beauty. These fire marks were invented for the purpose of and used as a guide for the insurance company fire brigades. If, in the event a fire brigade arrvived on the scene and found that it was not their office that insured the risk, they went home again, leaving the owner or public to fight the fire. This painted lead fire mark, depicting the Royal Exchange Building, is from the Royal Exchange Assurance of Houses and Goods from Loss by Fire. Founded by royal charter in 1720 and itself ravaged by fire and destroyed in 1838. The fire mark was invented for the purpose of and used as a guide for the insurance sponsered fire brigades. If the brigade arrived on the scene and found that their office did not insure the risk, as evidenced by the absence of an appropriate fire mark, they went home again. A true historic curiosity.
