This water flask is the prototype for a shape which was copied in far more lavish and durable materials from the sixteenth century. A famous example in gemset rock crystal is in the Topkapi Palace Collection (Atil, E.: The Age of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, exhibition catalogue, Washington D.C., 1987, no.60, p.129. Two copies were also made in pottery at Iznik. One is published by Atasoy and Raby (Atasoy, N and Raby, J.: Iznik -- the Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, no.634, while the other, painted in the 'Damascus' palette, is in a private collection. For a metal prototype in the Sadberk Hanim Museum, see, Bodur, Fulya, The Art of Turkish Metalworking, Istanbul, 1987, p.112, pl.A.55. « Less

A WARNING TO ALL ANTIQUE ARMS COLLECTORS AND DEALERS: A PERSON BY THE NAME OF JASPER SMIT IN THE NETHERLANDS HAS SENT US OBNOXIOUS EMAILS AND IS THREATENING TO RUIN OUR BUSINESS BECAUSE WE REFUSED TO SELL HIM AN ANTIQUE SWORD AT THE PRICE HE HAD OFFERED. IF YOU ARE A DEALER OR COLLECTOR OF ANTIQUE ARMS IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST TO IGNORE THIS PERSON.
A stunning circa 1580 massive cutlass with a giant shell guard and a 2 ¼†wide multi-fuller blade!
This great rarity would have been the battle weapon of a great warrior or fearsome pirate. Original as found condition! No restorations or repairs! Original wood grip intact with some ancient surface insect damage. It has been coated with a light coat of varnish or lacquer as a conservation application. The no nonsense blade measures 25†long by 2 ¼†wide. It displays natural lamination and great aging. This is the widest blade we have ever seen on a sword of this type. These type blades, but with a spatula tip, were uses on German katzbaldgers on the early - mid 16th century.
The blade is adorned with a brass alloy inlay of the Solingen guild cross and orb mark. Absolutely gorgeous!!!
A great rarity for the most discerning collection!
Price is firm.
