Traveling icons are often, as with this fine example, so elaborately detailed they provide a visual narrative of Jesus’ life on a small and a very personal scale. The upper portion of the central panel shows the installation of the cross, with the background structures and ornamentation done in the style of medieval Russia. Below, running clockwise is the resurrection of Christ, His elevation and glory in heaven, enthronement of the Virgin Mary, and her death. The front cover has the cross with the walls and buildings in the distance set in an oval, bordered by two columns and ornate foliage. The inscription above and below the upper portion of the cross reads, "King of Glory, Jesus Son of God, Christ. The right panel follows this theme on the upper section of the right panel with the glorification of the Virgin surrounded by saints and angels. Below we see an icon of the Virgin Mary worshiped by six figures including Saints Alexander and Cyril. Next to it is the same arrangement except for the substitution of Prince Vasiley, followed by a panel with Saints Antony and Alexey, and then Saints Antony and Theodosius. Each of the miniature icons shows the Virgin holding the infant Jesus in a different posture, while the faithful offer their homage and gifts in a variety of ways. Upon the upper area of the left panel is the mystical depiction of Christ's elevation to heaven in the presence of God the Father, Who is offering His blessings. Four scenes from Jesus' life are depicted below; baptism as a baby, His baptism by St. John, entrance in Jerusalem, and Christ's glorification. Contained within this charming triptych, set against dramatic blue and white enamel, are images of Jesus’ miraculous life on earth, and His transcendence in the afterlife of heaven-- a perfect companion for a pious traveler's journey on the mystical road of faith. - (PF.5193) « Less

Set against lovely pale blue enamel decorated with delicate foliage, the two low-relief images of Christ and St. John the Baptist present a striking picture. On the left panel Christ holds an open book upon which is written, " Come to me all those in need, for you shall be saved." His clothing is beautifully modeled with considerable detail, as is the very fine beard and hair. On the right panel is the winged St. John the Baptist (or 'Forerunner'), who lovingly cradles the infant Jesus as he baptizes Him. His wearing angel-like wings proclaims him as a divine messenger. This image also symbolizes the future baptism of Jesus by St. John, which marked a pivotal point in Christ's spiritual life. The inscription in Cyrillic states, "St. John the Baptist"; who is nonetheless, instantly identified not only by the act of baptism, but also by the rough garment of a desert ascetic. Within this very fine icon we see two worlds, the world of flesh and the realm of the spirit; of the past being present here and now, while eternity too is present as an ever living possibilityforthefaithful.-(PF.5194)Enameled Brass Diptych Traveling Icon PF.5194Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 6.75" (17.1cm) high x 10.25" (26.0cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style:Russian Orthodox Medium:Enameled Brass « Less

On this very handsome icon Christ and the Virgin Mary are set against a delicate pale blue enameled background. The Virgin holds a scroll upon which is inscribed, "Oh, Lord of the Universe, Save the Son of God, I pray upon my knees". Her head is slightly downcast as she humbly looks upon the radiance of her glorified Son. Her garments are richly ornamented, whereas those of Christ are somewhat more modest. Both styles were typical of late Byzantine art, and adopted by Russian artists. Christ holds an open book upon which is written, "Come to me all those in need. You will be saved." He stares intently as if from beyond the veil of heaven, upon the world and its inhabitants for whom He offers His blessings. On the front cover is the cross, with Jerusalem in the style of a medieval Russian city seen in the background. This icon has an immediate impact, communicating a message to the faithful of their coming salvation, vividly represented by a master artist. - (PF.5196) Enameled Brass Diptych Traveling Icon PF.5196Origin:Russia Circa:1750ADto1900ADDimensions:10.5(26.7cm) high x 6.5" (16.5cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass « Less

Designed for private devotion this very fine plaque depicts the Archangel Gabriel, framed in the center, at the moment of announcing to the Virgin Mary that she has conceived the Son of God. He is dressed in the style of a Russian nobleman of the 16th Century, with hands crossed over the chest and a geometrically ornate halo. The lovely background of green, yellow, white and blue enamel adds dimension and perspective. Surrounding the angel are fifteen saints each set in a roundel and connected by leafy branches, as if a tree of saintly life. In the center at top is Christ offering His blessings, with His Mother to His right and St. John the Baptist at left. On the upper register Christ is seen seated on a decorated throne with His mother the Virgin Mary on His right, and St. John the Baptist (the "Forerunner") on His left. The bottom panel shows four busts of saints each with their arms folded over their chests. In similar enthronement scenes Christ is typically shown holding the Holy Bible while making a sign of blessing. Both the Virgin and St. John bow their heads in reverence. This simple and moving presentation is given some ornamentation at the top in the style of 11th Century Russian-Byzantine decoration. Though the faces are smooth from age and the touch of the pious, the power from this icon is much larger than its size;remindingusoftheabilityartpossessestotranscendtimeandspace.-(PF.5207)Christ the King with Saints - PF.5207Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 3.5" (8.9cm) high x 2.25" (5.7cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style:Russian Orthodox

Throughout his life Abraham was directed by God to perform many difficult tasks, including establishing a new land for his people, i.e. Canaan. God appeared to Abraham in the form of three angels, representing the Holy Trinity. He offers this mystical gathering bread and wine, prefiguring the Eucharist. In the background is an oak tree and buildings in the style of Medieval Russia. The use of brilliant blue and white enamel heightens the drama and adds perspective.
