It was perhaps from such a jug that Samuel annointed Saul king of Israel. Whatever its past, we are aware that it was crafted by ancient hands, held and used by people who lived in a time and place much different from our own. The ancient trade routes to the East did a thriving business in incense, and the shrines and temples of antiquity were laden with the precious smoke from its burning. Centuries ago, in the age of David and Solomon, some now-forgotten person placed incense in this brazier so that the smoke would rise through the holes to please some unknown god.
