Captain Arthur Small Painting, Clipper Ship Stag Hound http://www.antiques.com/classified/17923/Antique-Captain-Arthur-Small-painting--Clipper-ship-Stag-Hound Captain arthur andrew small (american, 1885-1958) portrait painting of the clipper ship stag hound in singapore. Oil on canvas, dated 1940, signed lower right, original frame, titled on reverse of frame. Size: 21" x 27". Condition: all original; requires a professional cleaning of the yellowed varnish. The stag hound was built in boston, mass. In 1850 by donald mckay, and at 215' in length was the largest and fastest ship of her kind, providing competition with the shipbuilding trade in new york city, which had heretofore dominated the clipper ship industry. She completed numerous trips around the horn to china, delivering her cargo in record time. She caught fire in 1861, ending her 11 year career. Captain arthur small, a native of brockton, mass., was from a family of lighthouse keepers. He was a keeper on 'bug' light on the outskirts of boston harbor, and then, in 1922, became keeper of palmer's island lighthouse, offshore from new bedford, massachusetts. He was also an amateur painter, who specialized in portraits of ships. He was recognized by the u.S. Government for his bravery during the hurricane of 1938 which struck palmer's island. On october 1st, the day of the storm, small and his wife, mabel, were on the island. Arthur attempted to walk the 350 feet from his house to the lighthouse to man it during the hurricane. High waves, however, covered the island, and he was knocked unconscious. His wife, while trying to launch a rowboat to come to his rescue, was swept away and drowned. Arthur eventually recovered enough to swim to the lighthouse, which he then continued to operate until the following morning, when he in turn was rescued and taken to hospital. His collection of paintings and library were all destroyed in the hurricane, together with his life savings of $7,500, which mabel had on her possession. He is buried in arlington national cemetery. This work was painted in 1940, some two years after the event.

Flora Danica, Royal Copenhagen Custard Cup, 1916 http://www.antiques.com/classified/17924/Flora-Danica-Royal-Copenhagen-custard-cup-1916 Flora danica porcelain covered custard cup by royal copenhagen. Dated 1916. Size: 3.25" height x 2.5" diameter. Flora danica is one of the finest of porcelain patterns. The original service was commissioned by the danish king, christian vii, in 1790, as a gift for empress catherine the great of russia. However, she died prior to its completion and the danish royal family retained the service. The name and decoration of the service were derived from the botanical atlas, "flora danica," published between 1761-1883, which illustrates in some 3,060 copper plate engravings the flora of denmark. Johann christoph bayer undertook the monumental task of transcribing these illustrations into designs for porcelain, a task that took him 12 years to complete. Today, the msrp for a cup, cover and saucer is in excess of $3,500. This example is initialed on the underside by the decorator 'gd' and dated 28th april 1916, together with the underglaze blue wavy lines mark of the royal copenhagen factory. Examples not bearing the latin names of the plants were sometimes produced by the decorators for themselves. Condition: there are two tiny nicks to the underside of the cover; and a couple of the floral petals of the cover were chipped during the manufacture of the piece. This offering includes a cup with cover, but no saucer.

Engraved by alexander lawson. This hand colored, engraving depicts six species: gadwal duck, eider duck, female eider, smew, ruddy duck, and female ruddy. Plate size: 10.25" x 13.25". Condition: some light foxing. Alexander wilson, a scottish emigrant, has been referred to as the "father of american ornithology", and his treatise, "american ornithology," first published between 1808-1814, predated j.J. Audubon by about two decades. In it he depicted 262 species of birds, including 39 previously unknown varieties. The nine volumes contained his descriptions of each bird and seventy-six hand colored engravings. Because he was working on a limited budget, he squeezed several species into each plate, juxtaposing them in different poses and filling the working area right up to the edges of the plate. Although wilson drew the birds himself, the actual engravings were produced by john warnicke and alexander lawson. Wilson traveled extensively in search of his birds and died as a result of an exhausting excursion in 1813, prior to the completion of the final volume. His friend, george ord, posthumously published the eighth volume in 1814 and also edited the final ninth volume, to which he added a biography of wilson's life.

Luigi Lucioni Painting, Red Barns Lake Champlain, Vt http://www.antiques.com/classified/17861/Luigi-Lucioni-painting-red-barns-Lake-Champlain-VT Luigi lucioni (italian/american, 1900-1988) original painting of red barns near lake champlain, probably shelburne, vermont. Signed and dated lower right 1932. Oil on artist board. Painting size: 9 7/8 inches x 13 7/8 inches, offered in a modern arts and crafts style gilded frame. Original condition, with no in-painting or restoration. This painting is one of lucioni's early vermont creations and is a slightly smaller version of the painting included by stuart embury in his book, "the art and life of luigi lucioni" (2006), as illustration 32.1, "barns near the lake", from the collection of dunbar w. Bostwick. Dunbar bostwick was the son-in-law of electra havemeyer webb. It is generally agreed that electra havemeyer webb, the creator and founder of vermont's famous shelburne museum, first introduced lucioni to vermont, when she commissioned a painting by him for her daughter's wedding and invited lucioni to spend the summer of 1930 at her estate in shelburne. Electra became lucioni's greatest patron, and it seems probable that this painting was also commissioned by electra for her daughter and son-in-law and that it depicts the bostwick barns. Lake champlain and the mountains of the adirondacks are visible in the background on the left of the painting.
