A Batak Couple Called Debata Idup http://www.antiques.com/classified/1084929/Antique-A-Batak-Couple-called-Debata-Idup This item has been sold. We acquired this very fine debata idup couple from a yogyakarta collection over two decades ago. Debata idup is first of all a representative of the supreme god "si mulajadi na bolon and according to dr. Jamaluddin s. Hasibuan, debata idup in the form of a couple is present in a household to cure the problem of sterility. The debata idup were invoked simultaneously by the husband and wife. The effigies being held and worshiped in a prescribed ritual. In addition the debata idup was the protector of the house, its occupants and their fields. Both figures have the old receptacles in their chests, where the datu placed the empowering magic called pupik. The female is wrapped in an "ijuke" blanket which further empowers her. The receptacle plugs were removed long ago and only residual of the pupik remains. Nice patina and some encrustation. The feet and areas on the bodies show minor losses. Accompanied by custom metal display stands. Height, male 12", female 11.5". Mid 20th c.

Batak Ancestor Figure Called Samboan http://www.antiques.com/classified/1084930/Antique-Batak-Ancestor-figure-called-Samboan This item has been sold. A very fine quality batak figure that has been called both a samboan or ancestor figure and a pagar or protection figure. The absence of the hollowed area in the head or chest, which is filled with magic called pupik, lessens the pagar attribution, yet the figure could also be empowered with offering placed at his feet in receptacles. We can only speculate. This figure is part of a seattle collection that we acquired almost two decades ago. A very refined figure, standing in the classic bent knee posture, with arms forward across the lower torso holding a head. Rich, dark patina with surface losses around the head along with minor dents and mild cracking, (as shown), this is a very fine example of a classic toba batak figure. Accompanied by a custom metal display stand. Height 13.75". Mid 20th century

A Very Fine Batak Pagar http://www.antiques.com/classified/1084931/Antique-A-very-fine-Batak-Pagar- This item has been sold. Originally from a seattle collection and in our collection for almost two decades, a very fine example of a batak pagar. Pagar are created and used by the batak village datu or priest for the purpose of protecting houses, fields and people from malevolent spirits called begu. They can be found in various quality, sizes and postures but always with a plugged hole in the torso or head that contains pupik or the magic substance that empowers the figure. This figure is notable in its artistic execution. One can only speculate about the symbolism of the child beyond the known fact that much of the power of the pupik magic has to do with a child selected by the datu. The plug in the head of this pagar has been removed in order to remove its power, although there is residual pupik in the hole and remnants of rice flower around the feet. The over all condition is very good with loss only to the base, as shown. There are the usual nicks and slight dents, with dark rich patina on the contact points. A custom metal stand accompanies the piece. Size: h,16.5", w,2.75", 3" front to back. First half of the 20th c.

Chest Ornament Called Moka Kina, Papua New Guinea http://www.antiques.com/classified/1084941/Antique-Chest-Ornament-called-Moka-Kina--Papua-New-Guinea A very striking chest ornament, or pectoral worn by men during certain festivals in the wihgi valley, western highlands, usually associated with the killing of a large number of pigs which are roasted and eaten. This is a fine old tribal piece from the mark siedler collection. Siedler lived in new guinea in the 1970's managing a hotel there. He became very intrigued by the culture and amassed a large, well chosen collection. We were fortunate to acquire a few items from him over a decade ago. This moka kina was among those acquired. A copy of a published article about seidler is included with the piece. For additional information about kina please see the chris boylan article in tribal arts magazine vol.1/1 winter spring 2000. The piece is well preserved yet shows some age and the effect of use. The pigment colored resin and mud on which the kina shell is mounted shows the effects of dehydration and shrinkage. There is some cracking and minor losses. The fiber band on which the piece was suspended is now gone although examination of the back reveals the original holes where it was attached. The large kina shell is in very good condition. Accompanied by a custom, metal display stand. Early to mid 20th c.

Abelam Warriors Device Known As Kara-ut, Png http://www.antiques.com/classified/1084944/Antique-Abelam-warriors-device-known-as-Kara-ut--PNG The original purpose of the kara-ut seems to have been to provide protection to the wearer and to at the same time frighten the enemy. When going into battle the abelam warrior would bite the piece to hold it firmly in his mouth. The tusks are said to symbolize the strength and bravery of the boar. Kara means boar or pig and ut means net bag. The body of the figure contains magic in the form of herbs and leaves that are thought to protect the wearer. The kara-ut is also worn around the neck as a pectoral or hanging down the back at various tribal events called "sing-sings" where they are principally a status symbol. Our example has been in storage for two decades. An Antique, Silver Mounted Omani Khanjar http://www.antiques.com/classified/1084768/Antique-An-Antique--Silver-Mounted-Omani-Khanjar This piece has been sold. Traditionally, as can be seen on our example, the omani khanjar has seven silver rings on the front of the scabbard, bound by silver wire. There are, in addition, two silver concho like, chased discs adorning the rings. The horn hilt has a silver design inlaid and is banded at the base with chased silver. It is of either rhino or buffalo, uncertain which. All of the copious silver work is finely chased and engraved. According to elgood, omani silver work is the best in arabia. The silver is nicely patinated and has not been cleaned for decades. The olive green velvet which covers a portion of the mid scabbard is worn and merits some restoration as is the case with the small leather area on the back. The very good, solid steel blade has some small areas of light spotting and light abrasion but should clean nicely if one chooses to do so. A good example of a mid to late 19th century omani khanjar. Happy to supply additional photos or information on request.
