A 19th Century Naturalist Silvered Bronze Casket Signed http://www.antiques.com/classified/1090297/Antique-A-19th-century-naturalist-silvered-bronze-casket-signed A silvered bronze casket signed by auguste cain (1821-1894) topped with a pheasant, with two handles and four legs made of tree branches. Of the two main sides, oval niches are decorated on one hand with two rabbits and the other three partridges. The box is richly decorated with branches and mulberry fruit and nut trees. All the decorative elements of this box are in high relief which gives much life to this casket. It is very representative of the romantic movement, which in addition to its influence on the sculpture aimed on the portrait and the treatment of certain types of subjects, promotes the emergence of a particular genre: the animal sculpture. Animals fascinate the romantics; they represent the wildlife, the world of nature, perfect mix between violence and sensibility. The animal sculptors are simply following a path already opened by the painters, first by the english, then by the romantics of the 1820s in particular gericault and horace vernet. The work of antoine louis barye is at the peak of the genre, it brings in its wake many sculptors such as alfred barye, his son, pierre-jules and his son in law, auguste cain, the sculptor of the lions and tigers, which made the representation of these beasts his specialty. In spite of the reluctance of the academic society which considers the animal unworthy of the great art, the critics and the public speak very highly of this production, which clearly influenced the decorative arts. The animal sculptors following the example of antoine-louis barye also produced many decorative objects. Many artworks appeared at that time, using the animal directory. Stork, turtle, lizards or frogs appear on the base or on the stems of the candelabra. Each of these animal representations reflects, in its way, the romantic impulse that runs throughout europe. Fin xix° period, circa: 1880. Dim: w: 10,2 in - d: 4,7in - h: 7,5in.

Charles x period, circa: 1820. Dim: w: 6,3 in - d: 4,7in - h: 3,9in. This rococo style clock is nicely decorated with foliage and is topped with a love holding a sundial and decorated under the enameled dial of a quiver of arrows and a torch. The ormolu or gilt bronze had in the 18th century an extraordinary development which found its origin under the reign of louis xiv, with the installation of a foundry for domenico cucci at the gobelins. Bronze allows artisans, under louis xv, to show the greatest imagination and adapt the new rococo style. The first part of the reign of louis xv is marked by the new importance of the ornament which lead to the rococo style. The term rocaille found its origine in the mineral world and indicate small stones, rocks and piece of glass of irregular form. Juste-aurèle meissonnier (1695-1750) is the first one to use the term rocaille to define patterns inspired of shells of irregular forms or asymmetrical. Once introduced in the interior decoration the shell knew an exceptionnal development. The infatuation for the shells and the minerals are part of general interest for natural history. Rocaille and shells are the basic elements of decoration but also we note the presence of elements from the vegetable, floral and mineral world, sometimes stylized as the leaves and foliage in the friezes, sometimes realistic as laurel or oaks branches, they reflect the predominance of nature as a model. Pair Of Marble Vases With Giltbronze Mounts / Paire D'u http://www.antiques.com/classified/1090374/Antique-Pair-of-marble-vases-with-giltbronze-mounts---Paire-d--u An important pair of vases in brown cherry red marble baluster-shaped ornate with rich giltbronze louis xv style mounts. The two handles are decorated with foliage. After the revolution, the french bourgeoisie and the court of napoleon iii dreamed of finding the splendor and elegance of the old regime. The influence of the empress eugenie, who devotes a boundless admiration for marie-antoinette, is crucial in this new fashion. The new wealthy industry leaders relay this new trend, which allows them to surround themselves with an aristocratic background, copied from the previous century. In the middle of the nineteenth century, between 1852 and 1870 under the reign of napoleon iii and much later, appear the " style" furniture and objets d'art, perfect replicas of those created in the eighteenth century. Very good condition. Napoléon iii period, circa: 1870. Sculpture In Biscuit After Boizot http://www.antiques.com/classified/1090398/Antique-Sculpture-in-biscuit-after-Boizot On a circular base, a young girl rests on a thick cushion, holding a wreath of flowers out to her lover. Next to her a little love is represented, also holding a wreath. This group represents l'amant couronné created by louis-simon boizot in 1784, when he was director of the sculpture workshop at the sevres factory. This biscuit has been made in the 19th century probably by the samson factory, it bears on the base a signature of boizot. The biscuits made in sevres in the 18th century came back into fashion in the second half of the 19th century, and were largely imitated by other factories until the 20th century. The samson manufacture, founded in 1845, claimed his ability to imitate the rarest ceramics. The samson was used to sell their pieces for the price of a reproduction. The letterhead of the manufacture clearly stated this aptitude by using words such as imitation and reconstitution of old masterpieces. They copied the pieces of the most amazing collections always with the approval of the owners. Besides, the sevres factory sold them molded models made of plaster of its own collection. Other models exist on the theme of l'amant couronné, and bear the clear mark of the samson house. A copy, directly coming from the factory is kept with its plaster in the georges vigne collection. This model has also probably benefited from a molded models sold by sevres because the plaster has exactly the same size as the biscuit. Very good condition. Napoléon iii period, circa: 1870. Dim: w: 6,3 in - d: 6,3in - h: 7,9in. Epoque napoléon iii, circa: 1870 dim: l:16cm, p:16cm, h:20cm.
