The origins of the samurai were considered civilians and had to provide their own weapons and were the first organized army in japan. Later feudal lords developed their own armies instilling the idea that it was shameful not to have risked one's life in the line of duty and thus the modern idea of the samurai was created. In the 16th century jesuit leader saint francis xavier noted that "there is no nation in the world which fears death less."

When william prince of orange in holland accepted the invitation to the throne of england he brought with him dutch influence which later became an important element in the design of english furniture. As such the stylistic period lasted somewhat later into 1710/1720 as it later diffused into the general english public. The style came after the queen anne style to which it is similar but it also adds netherlandish taste.

traditionally, cabinets on stands were designed to contain papers or collections of curiosities. The 'oyster' veneers in this cabinet are made from olive wood which, due to its distinctive figure, was much sought after by cabinet makers in england and northern europe. Although not native to these regions, it is native to the mediterranean region and was often imported for furniture veneers in the late william and mary period of the late 17th and early 18th century.

It is possible that this model is a teaching aid; it is likely that it was a grand tour model. While most grand tour models may represent an actual archaelogical site, this one is more likely to be an original composition representing an idealized form but is similar to the tempietto of san pietro by bramante and the florence cathedral dome by brunelleschi.

provenance: private english collection

additional information: the grand tour has long been a symbol of wealth and freedom. In the late 16th century, it became quite fashionable for young aristocrats to visit italy and france as the finishing touch on their classical education. Travel was arduous and costly during this time and possible only for a privileged class and thus the grand tour lasted until the 19th century when railways across europe allowed for easier travel. While these travels were very popular with the english, they were also undertaken by other northern europeans as well as americans.

the grand tour was developed out of the idea of traveling for the sake of curiosity and cultural development. These travels not only provided a cultural education but also allowed wealthier grand tourists an opportunity to purchase items unavailable at home, and it thus increased the travelers' social standing and prestige. Travelers would return with crates of books paintings sculpture and other cultural goods which would be displayed in libraries, gardens, and purpose-built galleries in their homes.

a large number of artists such as giovanni battista piranesi and giovanni antonio canal (canalletto) benefited from the patronage of the grand tour as travelers purchased souvenirs.

see the model of bramante's tempietto of san pietro in the victoria and albert museum for a comparable example.

a comparable example was sold at christies london march 6 2008 for $49,000. And while caves containing bones of mastodons and llamas suggest that there was human occupation dating from as far back as 12,000 bc, it is believed that the chavin culture started around 900 bc. The chavin civilization was eventually conquered by the incas less than a hundred years before the arrival of the spaniards.

at its height from 400 to 600 bc, the chavin civilization is regarded for its intense design skill fueled by the ritual use of psychedelic drugs. Often the chavin culture is described as cult-like and there is no significant evidence that indicates that the culture was an empire or a state power; as in the main temple, there are no military structures nor any indication of major public works like irrigation or housing.

two of the main motifs in chavin iconography are shapeshifting feline heads and the transformation of humans into something else, which suggest the intertwining of cultures from both the coast and the mountains and likely also from the jungle on the other side of the andes.
