George Iii Regency Wine Coaster John Roberts 1807 http://www.antiques.com/classified/1122105/Antique-GEORGE-III-REGENCY-WINE-COASTER-JOHN-ROBERTS-1807 searching for a georgian wine coaster? Here is one of today's highly sought after george iii early regency wine coasters by the well known john roberts & co., sheffield uk 1807. There is a broad curved fluting to the body, an egg and dart border, and a central sterling button in the turned wooden base. The underside has the original padding. It is marked around the rim of the base: john roberts & co.,the maker) , the date mark s for 1807, the standard mark ( the lion passant )tells you the item is silver, and the duty mark , the head for the current king or queen. Width 5 3/4" traditionally, the hallmarks are 'struck' using steel punches. The problem with traditional punching is that the process of punching displaces metal, causing some distortion of the article being marked. Also to insert the wooden base that silver had to be worked after the punches had been placed. The re-working usually reduced the clarity of the marks and sometimes removed them. The date mark s has been moved over the town mark, the crown (sheffield). John roberts worked in london and sheffield. At the time of the date mark s ( 1807) he was working in sheffield.

Medallion Wendt Antique Sterling Silver Salad Set http://www.antiques.com/classified/1122107/Antique-MEDALLION-WENDT-ANTIQUE-STERLING-SILVER-SALAD-SET Evidence strongly suggests that the originator of the die-stamped antique flatware pattern medallion was the great nineteenth century manufacturer john r. Wendt. On may 13, 1862 united states design patent 1580 was issued in his name. Quotes from the patent support the theory that his was the first die-cut medallion. Wendt produced some of the finest antique silver of his day, but he did not use a manufacturing mark of his own. Ball, black & co, one of the famous retailers in new york retailed most of his silver. This antique silver set has their mark and patent 925 to indicate silver content. The medallion is minerva. Date c. 1865 length 11 1/2". There is a triple monogram. A rare medallion salad set

Baltimore Clipper, Exposed Ribs http://www.antiques.com/classified/1122219/Antique--BALTIMORE-CLIPPER--EXPOSED-RIBS This rare antique model ship is a baltimore clipper, a privateer war 1812 ,is an example of the building style known as admiralty style, plank-on-frame construction with exposed ribs, to demonstrate construction of the original ship. In the 16th century british navy did not build their own ships; they were built by contractors after approval from â lords of the admiraltyâ, a group of aristocrates, nobility and civil servants. Since these people could not read plans, proposed ships were presented to them in the form of a model. Thus the building style ,admiralty style, exposed rib construction. There are two reasons for a model ship builder to chose a plank-on-frame construction . One, that is the way a real ship is built. Two, to expose internal details, to allow the viewer to examine hull timbers. during the war of 1812 privateers were permitted to prey upon the merchant fleet of great britain. The design for baltimore clippers emerged from the shipyards of fells point, baltimore in response for fast ships that could elude the lumbering british naval vessels. Clippers were âsharp builtâ, that is they had a v-shaped hull that could cut quickly through the waves. They were gaff-rigged schooners, many had a square sail for driving power on the foremast. They could sail closer to the wind and were much more maneuverable than british ships. this rare antique baltimore clipper is a scratch built model ship built entirely from scratch materials with no commercially fabricated parts except cordage, chain and belaying parts. It was built about 1900 according to the current owner from whom i purchased the model. Length overall 30". The rigging was redone 27 years ago by my father arthur j. Menard whose model ships were purchased in new york city by the seamen's bank which had the most famous marine collection in the u.S.A. The rigging has small wooden dead-eyes, and linen cord. It is in a new mahogany case.

Persian Tiffany Sterling Silver Tureen Ladle http://www.antiques.com/classified/1123929/Antique-PERSIAN-TIFFANY-STERLING-SILVER-TUREEN-LADLE The famous edward c. Moore designed the persian tiffany sterling silver flatware pattern which was patented in 1872, being introduced in the same year. This ladle is the size needed for a tureen. Moore had a large collection of orientalia, including much near eastern artwork with examples from persia, syria, and india. Those interests had significant influence on the design of the persian sterling silver flatware pattern. We see moresque designs with intricate, interlocking scrolls. The design is complex, with flowers and foliage interwoven within a network of arches and swirles with unusual geometric shape. Both the front and the back of the handles are completely covered with ornamentation except for an open space on the termnal front for engraving. On this sterling silver ladle there is an entwined script monogram with the letters l and a. The designs on the lower shanks are the same but the designs on the front and back of the terminal are different. It is a well balanced ladle with an attractive curved shank. This tiffany sterling persian pattern ladle, 11" long, is a "must" in a tiffany collection. Nice weight. Excellent condition.

George Iii Georgian Wine Coaster John Roberts 1807 http://www.antiques.com/classified/1123933/Antique-GEORGE-III-GEORGIAN-WINE-COASTER-JOHN-ROBERTS-1807 Searching for a georgian wine coaster?
