A sturdy and heavy, slightly curved, single edged austrian blade, with a wide full-length fuller, stamped on one side of the forte, l.Zemler, wien, the other side is stamped with the inspector marks, in its steel scabbard. Many polish swords from the 1917-1920 period had austrian, german, or russian blades, and polish made hilts, see (a) andrzej nadolski's âpolska bronâ page 163 (b) "szabla żoÅnierza polskiego xix i xx wiek" by aleksander czerwiÅski & lesÅaw dudekan, page 160. Also a comparable polish sword with the same hilt, but with side bars, and the same austrian blade, is published in the catalog, "bron i barwa niepodleglej polski 1918 â 1978", page 53 no 38 eb, and also page 56 no 41 jw. In 1921 a polish regulation pattern sword appeared, with polish made blades, and the standard for all units of the polish army, a single bar hilt. Due to the changes, all the swords in the polish army must had single bar hilts, so the swords with hilts that had additional bars, were modified, and the side bars were removed to follow regulation pattern, see "szabla żoÅnierza polskiego xix i xx wiek" by aleksander czerwiÅski & lesÅaw dudekan, page 161-192. Therefore, the two side bars which were originally on the hilt of this particular sword, were removed to meet with the regulation pattern. For similar swords without side bars, please see: (a) "dzieje szabli w polsce" by wÅodzimierz kwaÅniewicz, page 171 (b) the russian edition of the book, "polish sword" by wlodzimierz kwasniewicz, published in saint petersburg 2005, page 167, a color photograph of the polish sword from the collection of the russian museum, and another on page 138.
the buyer will be provided with a copy of the pages from the mentioned references, together with the certificate of authenticity.
condition: the sword is in good condition considering its age, with signs of usage. The blade is with spots of minor pitting, with signs of professional cleaning, the leather washer is cracked. The brass hilt is with minor nicks and scratches, a small dent on the backpiece.
measurements: overall length with the scabbard: 102.8 cm (40 1/2 in), the length without the scabbard: 89 cm (35 in), length of the blade: 76.2cm (30 inches).

all items are guaranteed to be authentic antiques, and not reproductions.

all our artifacts are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

we ship internationally

Sold Antique Polish Napoleonic Military Hat Rogatywka http://www.antiques.com/classified/1133364/Antique-SOLD-Antique-Polish-Napoleonic-Military-Hat-Rogatywka sold an extremely rare museum quality authentic antique polish napoleonic military hat rogatywka, most likely a hat of an officer of the pospolitego ruszenia wojewodztwa sierackiego. The second known example of this particular model of hat is in museum of the polish army (muzeum wojska polskiego) in warsaw, and is published in the book-catalog of the exhibition, ânapoleon i polacyâ by macyszyn jacek, page 91. And also in the book âi podaje wiek wiekowiâ .Page 200 no.585 .The buyer will be provided with a copy of the pages from the mentioned references, together with the certificate of authenticity.
details: constructed of leather, cardboard, and cloth, which was originally of light blue color, but is now completely faded, the actual blue color can be seen only in some small areas. The top of the hat is festooned with crossed silver bullion thread cord, which extends to the four side corners of the hat. The front of the hat is with a hanging, finely woven and braided, silver bullion thread chain, affixed on the top by two wire hooks. The rim of the side is with its original brass plume socket, fastened by brass domed pins, which is exactly as on the hat in the polish museum collection. A leather band with remains of its original brass scale chinstrap, on leather lining, secured by large embossed buttons. The interior is complete with its original full leather lining, and sweat band.
condition: well used, the fabric is completely faded and worn, absence of the visor, and the fabric on the band, the sweatband shows wear from routine field use, the leather lining is damaged, and the bullion cord is worn. I do believe that the stitches on the exterior of the fabric were later added to prevent the folding down of the fabric, which most likely was originally glued to the hat, as shown on the hat at the museum of the polish army. To protect the hat from deformation, the previous owner had made of cardboard, leather, and styrofoam, a supporting construction, which can be easily removed since it is not glued to the hat, but is just holding by pressure.
considering the age and material, and that the hat is in its original condition free of restorations, as new elements, the item can be classified as in reasonable condition. All antiques are sold in the condition as acquired, we do not perform any restorations, but leave the decision regarding restoration to the future buyer.
measurements: height: from the base of the hat to the highest point: 24 cm (9 1/2 in), overall length from the rear to the front corner: 32 cm (12 5/8 in).
we try to describe items exactly as we see them, and include as many good pictures as needed, so a buyer knows exactly what they are getting. We ask that buyers please look at the pictures carefully.
please note that this hat is rarer than the hats of the famous polish napoleon guard lancers, of which there are many in museums and private collections, this is the second world-wide known example of this hat, only except for the one at the polish museum.
rogatywka is sometimes translated as peaked cap, a polish generic name for an asymmetrical, peaked, four-pointed cap used by various polish military formations throughout the ages. It is a distant relative of its 18th century predecessor, konfederatka, because of the use by members of the bar confederation. It consists of a four-pointed top, and a short peak. Although rogatywka (derived from rog = horn, corner) in english seems to mean the same as czapka - schapska.

all items are guaranteed to be authentic antiques, and not reproductions.

all our artifacts are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

we ship internationally

Jewish Hanukkah Menorah Porcelain Sculpture By Bailey Stern Leslie http://www.antiques.com/classified/1133454/Antique-Jewish-Hanukkah-Menorah-Porcelain-sculpture-by-Bailey-Stern-Leslie a porcelain art sculpture covered in a rich off â white glaze in the form of a hanukkah menorah, by bailey stern leslie, the best known of the five of torontoâs canadian five potters. A beautifully potted round hanukkah with nine wick-oil containers, or candle holders in the form of pots, mounted on a border. A center with a sculptured figure of two eastern european hasidic jews, a young boy with a yarmulke on his head, and long payot, holding the shamash in the form of a pitcher, assisted by an older man with longer hair, beard, and payot, dressed in a bekishe, with a shtreimel on his head. The long hair of the boy, and the older men, and the style of the shtreimel, is reminding of an 18th century engraving depicting r' yisroel baal shem tov, also with long hair, and wearing a similar style of a shtreimel. In my opinion, due to the artistâs polish - jewish background, this particular portrait of besht inspired bailey stern leslie in the creation of this sculpture.
the bottom of the sculpture is deeply hand signed by bailey stern, signed before firing, and stamped on the top before firing, by her seal with the initials bl.
dimensions: diameter: 30 cm (11 3/4 in). Height: 23 cm (9 in).
condition: in good condition, no chips, cracks, or repairs.
bailey stern leslie was the best known of the five of torontoâs canadian five potters, and was born 14 june 1904 in lodz poland, immigrating to canada in 1910, died on 11 september 1998 in toronto, ontario canada. She had spent her early years in cobalt, and moved to toronto when she was a teenager. She completed her b.A. From the university of toronto in 1926, and her m.A. In 1928. She began pottery study at the central technical school under âbobsâ howarth. In 1945 she furthered studies at alfred university, in new york state. Twice the president of the cgp, she was a consistent prize â winner and rigorous experimenter of glaze, her work has more than stood the test of time.
her work was displayed at international exhibitions: itabashi art museum in itabashi-ku, florence, geneva, prague, and syracuse, washington. The book, âa fine lineâ by gail crawford, includes a biography, and pictures of the same artwork of bailey stern. The buyer will be provided with copies together with the certificate of authenticity.
please note that the hanukkah is truly a work of art, and was created not for commercial gains, but as only a single example, where there does not exist any other one.
we do not know the exact date as to when it was made, but her other porcelain sculpture published in the book, âa fine lineâ by gail crawford, is dated to the early seventies.

all items are guaranteed to be authentic antiques, and not reproductions.

all our artifacts are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

we ship internationally

Sold Rare Antique Turkish Ottoman Sword Kilij With 17th Century Blade Damascus Steel Wootz http://www.antiques.com/classified/1133615/Antique-SOLD-Rare-Antique-Turkish-Ottoman-Sword-Kilij-with-17th-century-Blade-Damascus-steel-Wootz Rare antique turkish ottoman sword kilij with 17th century blade and 18th century solid silver mounts. Details: a rare 17th century, or earlier, massive and broad curved single edged turkish blade of kilij form, cut on each side with a long shallow fuller and yelmen made of damascus steel wootz. A hilt comprised of a grip with rhinoceros horn grip-scales, rising to a bulbous pommel in a characteristic turkish ottoman style, with a hole for the suspension tassel, bounded by pairs of silver washers, and enclosed by fluted silver straps, a silver crossguard with bud quillons. A leather-bound wooden scabbard stitched with spiral wire, and mounted with a large silver locket, a chape embossed and engraved on both sides with linear frame and foliage, and two bands with loops for suspension. One of the bands is stamped with imperial ottoman silver hallmarks tughra (probable of the mahmud i (sultan of the ottoman empire 1730 to 1754), but worn out, so it is uncertain) and a small square assay mark.
this is a very rare early turkish ottoman blade, similar blades are in the collection of the top kapi saray museum, and are dated to the 16th -17th century. During the 18th - 19th century period time, most of the 16th -17th century old turkish blades were remounted to the new fashion of mounting, with the pistol shape hilt, so even in turkish museums most of the ottoman swords have later mountings. This sword certainly has been remounted, due to the reinforcing metal zigzag band mounted on the ricasso of the blade under the crossguard.
references: examples of almost identical ottoman blades dated to the 16th -17th century, and mounted in the 18th -19th century mountings, can be seen in the topkapi sarayi museum istanbul, and also in the askeri museum istanbul turkey, and other collections.
references 1) âislamic swords and swordsmithsâ by unsal yucel 2) âthe arts of the muslim knight â the furusiyya art foundation collectionâ by bashir mohamed
condition: some age cracks in the horn scales, the silver mountings are worn with small dents.
measurements: the overall length in the scabbard is approximately: 96.5 cm (38 in). The overall length without the scabbard is approximately: 94 cm (37 in). The length of the blade is approximately: 79.5 cm (31 1/4 in).
the turkish ottoman kilij sword was mainly favored by the famous turkish ottoman elite cavalry sipahi, but was also very admired by nobility of balkan states, and eastern european countries such as hungary, poland, russia, and ukraine.

all items are guaranteed to be authentic antiques, and not reproductions.

all our artifacts are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

we ship internationally

A brass pistol shape hilt, and a bulbous pommel, in a characteristic turkish ottoman style, with a loop for the tassel. In its original leather-bound wooden scabbard, mounted with a large silver locket, and chape, embossed and engraved with foliage and trophies. Sold Antique Islamic Composite Bow Turkish Ottoman Or Indo Persian http://www.antiques.com/classified/1133720/Antique-SOLD-Antique-Islamic-Composite-Bow-Turkish-Ottoman-or-Indo-Persian Sold antique 17th-18th century islamic composite war bow turkish ottoman or indo persian. Of characteristic form with a rounded hand grip, painted on the exterior and interior in black and red, bordered with gold bands, and adorned with painted in gold and green shaped panels.
the process to make a composite bow was very long and complicated, different horn was used, wood, and sinew, and a correct balance between these different components provided a highly efficient bow, therefore composite bows were very expensive compared to other weapons. The composite bows were a powerful weapon of the islamic, tatar and eastern european armies. These types of bows were made in turkey and persia from the 15th to the 18th century. Since bows were very expensive and would not go out of fashion or style, they were passed from father to son and were used by the next generations, so bows made in the 17th century were still used during the 18th century.
condition: the bow is in its original condition, chips in the lacquer surface, some losses to the paint, one edge is slightly split.
overall length: 77 .5 cm (30 1/2 in).
references: a similar bows are published in the book: âtÃrk okÃuluÄuâ (ataturk kultur merkezi yayn) (turkish edition).Illustrations 150,151,152.
we do not want to make a judgment if the bow is turkish or indo persian, however we provide our clients with a certificate of authenticity to ensure that the bow is 100% authentic antique made in the 17th-18th century.
there are three layers in the composite bows: sinew on the back (the side under tension), wood for the core and horn on the belly (the compression side facing the archer). Turkish and indo persian bowyers purchased green wood or bamboo. The parts were shaped and reflexed as needed, seasoned for about a year, fitted, joined with glue and dried for another year. Pre-shaped horn strips were glued onto the belly of a bow. Both wood and horn were scored with a special toothed tool and glued together (clamping was achieved by tight binding with rope). Matching pairs of water buffalo horns were used almost exclusively, with an exception of longhorn cattle horns for some turkish bows. Cattle horns had to be boiled heated and pressed into a correct shape in special wooden molds. Buffalo horns are also more flexible and resilient than cattle horns and provide thicker strips. It is probable that in indo persian bows, instead of a solid strip, many thin ones were glued together into one wider strip. The back of a bow was then covered with sinew, leaving most of the ears/tips bare. Sinew usually came from cow leg tendons, possibly neck (back) tendons. Tendons from wild animals (deer, moose etc.) must have also been used, and, in the authors opinion, are better, leaner, stronger, longer and easier to work with. The dried tendon is pounded until separated into fibers, which are sorted into bundles of similar length. The bundles are soaked in glue and laid onto the back of a bow. 2-3 layers are used for a dry thickness of approx. 3-6mm. On turkish flight bows a ridge along the centre of siyahs was formed to increase cast. Bows were always seasoned after this last operation from 6 months to at least a year .Due to shrinkage of sinew and glue (and from deliberate, progressive reflexing betw. Layers of sinew in case of turkish) bows were at this point very strongly reflexed with tips touching or even crossed. The reflex made the tillering and stringing, which followed, a rather long and complicated operation. Glue was an important component of the bows, the amount of glue in a finished bow was almost equal to the relative amounts of sinew or horn. Only three kinds of collagen-based glues were used: fish, tendon and skin. For the fish glue, either dry skin from "the roof of the mouth" of danube sturgeon (turkish, other fish for chinese) or isinglass (sturgeon air bladder, chinese) were soaked in water and heated into solution. The turks mixed this glue with tendon glue, made from boiled tendons. A glue of lesser quality was made from boiled skins. Such glues readily absorb moisture rendering the bows useless in relative humidity above 70%. The bows had to be stored as dry as possible, kept by the fire, in the sun, or in heated cabinets. The tillering was accomplished by gradual bending a warmed bow with minimal scraping of the horn layer to balance the arms. The arms were also given the desired curvature and/or weight by warming and tying to special wooden forms until cooled. Turkish flight bows were heated in "conditioning boxes" for 24 hours up to 4 days before competitions to thoroughly dry them (the sinew, glue and horn acquire very high strength and elasticity when very dry). Of course, the bows were never shot when warm; heat, as well as moisture, would make them weak and follow the string. The finished bows were decorated with painted and gilded ornamentation. Wooden or horn "bridges" were glued on the belly side where the ears join the siyahs/knees as supports for string loops.

all items are guaranteed to be authentic antiques, and not reproductions.

all our artifacts are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

we ship internationally

Sold Antique American Civil War Sword Us Cavalry Saber Wrist Breaker By Sheble & Fisher http://www.antiques.com/classified/1133759/Antique-SOLD-Antique-American-Civil-War-Sword-US-cavalry-saber-Wrist-Breaker-by-Sheble---Fisher sold
authentic antique american civil war us cavalry sword model 1840, saber called the "wrist breakerâ manufactured by sheble & fisher, philadelphia.
details: a hilt with a three bar brass guard, and a leather covered wooden grip bound with roped brass wire, with a brass pommel. An extremely long slightly curved single edged flat back steel blade, with a narrow and wide fuller, stamped at the ricasso, "sheble & fisher / philad". The sword is in its original steel scabbard with two suspension rings.
condition: the sword is in good condition considering its age, except the ricasso with the makerâs name has scratches, which makes the makers name not clearly visible. There are two drilled holes on the outer side of the scabbard, one in the lower part of the steel scabbard, and the second at the upper part, most likely made by someone to mount on a wall.
measurements: overall length with the scabbard: 110 cm (43 1/4inches). Length of the sword without the scabbard: 105 cm (41 3/8 inches). Length of the blade: 90.7cm (35 3/4 inches).
samuel sheble and john stevenson were listed as fork manufacturers, and by 1862 they were listed as a supplier for military goods in the philadelphia business directory. John fisher at about this time was listed as, among other things, a hardware, cutlery, and instrument maker. It is believed that samuel sheble and john fisher started manufacturing at around 1859, when it was first noted that their firm 'sheble and fisher' were listed in the business directory. It is unclear as to how many swords sheble and fisher made of the m1840 & m1860 cavalry sabers, m1840 artillery saber, or nco swords. This is primarily due to the fact that no known evidence of a wide spread government contract exist, only a small amount of m1840 artillery swords & 1,000 nco swords are known to have been furnished to the government; this is further complicated by the fact that none of the swords in existence are known to have government inspector's stamps.

all items are guaranteed to be authentic antiques, and not reproductions.

all our artifacts are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

we ship internationally
