						Attributed to charleston, south carolina. Possibly by james main, w. 1813-1822 a newly discovered and previously undocumented american federal card or &quot;games&quot; table attributed to charleston, south carolina, circa 1810-1820. The present table, found in an estate, in the st. Paul, minnesota vicinity, belongs to a relatively rare, but extensively documented grouping of tables that were produced in charleston, south carolina during the federal era. It features a number of idiosyncratic details which suggest that the cabinet-maker's shop that produced this particular example had a familiarity of styles that were common to new york work, most notably in the presence of the table's astragal inlays, and five legs, which are turned, then reeded and end in an inverted urn shaped foot. New york details, such as these mentioned are common on charleston bedsteads, case furniture, and tables. What is most notably uncharacteristic of new york workshop practices is the incorporation of a &quot;round, elliptical front&quot;, more commonly called a &quot;d&quot; shape, which is rarely encountered in furniture produced by american cabinetmaking centers, other than those of the south carolina low country. Two card tables off this same architectural plan remain in the collection of the department of state, diplomatic reception rooms, and have been tentatively attributed to rhode island. This attribution has been more recently questioned, and a strong argument has been made suggesting a charleston origin. Virtually all the other examples that have been examined have been attributed to accordingly. Materials: mahogany, mahogany veneers, eastern white pine (frame), birch (fly rail)**, various light colored inlays, brass and steel. All by visual analysis. Microscopy report pending. Condition: exceptional. Minor repair to stress crack at the top of the upper left leg. Minor losses to the stringing, old, honey colored finish, with mellow patination. Dimensions: (all approximate) 28&quot; high, 18&quot; deep, 35&quot; width.

						A very rare southern federal mahogany secretary, circa 1815-1820 from south carolina, most likely made in georgetown, in exceptional condition, with the brass pulls being the only replacement or alteration. Undisturbed case pieces from the american south, such as this secretary, are relatively rare, particularly those that survive from areas outside of major urban centers.

georgetown was a thriving and affluent coastal community throughout the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, located at the tip of the waccamaw neck between the waccamaw river, winyah bay, and the atlantic ocean. It was originally surveyed as one of the ten baronies of the american colony that was divided among the eight lord proprietors of the province of carolina. It was formally established as a town in 1729. Crop experimentation was common amongst the early settlers of the area and included a number of commodities, most predominantly rice, but also fruits, teas, lumber, and indigo. Although the research of the cabinetmaking trade in the city of georgetown has been relatively unexplored, there are two known case pieces, both sideboards, attributed to workshops there. One is said to have descended in the family of joseph alston (1779-1816) and another, without any oral history, do exist. Both are shown in the furniture of charleston 1680-1820 by bradford l. Rauschenberg an john bivins, jr. Suggesting that there was an active cabinetmaking trade there that was patronized by the affluent members of the local community.

stylistically, the pattern of this secretary follows an architectural scheme that could have been made in a number of areas in south that were influenced by northern workshops, but it displays idiosyncratic construction elements, materials, and a sophisticated and evolved fitted interior that suggest it was made in a cabinetshop in an urban region familiar to the relatively new designs popular in the late neo-classical and classical areas, most notably new york, but still maintains a somewhat naive interpretation of that style. There is a remarkably similar secretary bookcase in the collection of colonial williamsburg that is signed by charles c. Parkes, of lynchburg, virginia, and shown in southern furniture 1680-1830. The colonial williamsburg collection by ronald l. Hurst and jonathan prown, plate 145., however, considering the family history and provenance of this secretary, coupled with the abundant use of southern yellow pine as a secondary wood, it seems most logical that an attribution to georgetown would be unassailable, as mcclellanville is approximately 30 miles south of georgetown, south carolina.

history: this secretary was owned by hugh swinton mcgillivray of mcclellanville, sc, descended to his step-daughter in-law mrs. W.B. Stratton of walterboro, sc and sold at her estate auction on october 11, 1987 in walterboro.

provenance: the estate of the late francis d. &quot;skeeter&quot; mcnairy, savannah, georgia.

condition: exceptional, with no repairs of note. The finish is a non-original french polish shellac determined by visual analysis using uv light exposure. One turned foot is missing a small portion on the side. All glue blocks appear to be present. No alteration to the cornice and there are no inscriptions. The writing surface is a twentieth century replacement. The glass appearing in the upper-case panels is old, and possibly original to the piece.

dimensions: height 95 3/8&quot; width 47&quot; depth 21 7/8&quot;

materials: mahogany, mahogany veneers, southern yellow pine (backboards), eastern white pine (lower drawer sides, bottoms, and fronts), tulip poplar (interior secretary drawer sides) brass, and glass.

						A superior english regency rosewood games table of the highest ranking in terms of condition, form, and details of remarkable finesse. The table incorporates the best design elements, exotic woods, and materials of the english late neo-classical style that occurred between the years 1811, when george prince of wales became &quot;regent&quot;, that is to say king of england, in all but title, and 1820, when he succeeded as king george iv, after the death of his father, george iii. The basic form of the table appears in the publication designs for household furniture and interior decoration, published in 1806 by george smith, brewer street, golden square, london. Numerous related tables and case pieces reside in both windsor castle, buckingham palace, and the victoria and albert museum. Condition: exceptional. No repairs or breaks. The legs have been re-enforced at some time in the table's history with steel braces on the underside. The table retains what appears to be the original baize wool playing surface. Original brass casters with wheels. Inscriptions/label: the table bears a paper label on the underside which is printed and reads: &quot;bartlett's depositor haslemere&quot;. Haslemere is a town in surrey, england and is close to the border with both hampshire and west essex on the major road between london and portsmouth, south-west of guildford. The table also bears a chiseled indentation on the pocket drawer bottom which reads: 2075 lo/n/t ae/n/t } pr while this mark is undetermined in its nature, &quot;ae&quot; is most likely a latin inscription meaning small temple or castle, and the further initials are likely related to the table's original owner. Dimensions: height 28&quot;, width 35 3/4&quot;, depth 17 1/2&quot;. Materials: rose, king's, and zebra woods, ormolu mounts of &quot;honey-suckle flowers&quot; and &quot;anthemion&quot; (a greek word for flower) derived from c.H. Tantham's etchings of ancient ornamental architecture drawn from the originals in rome and other parts of italy during the years 1794, 1795, and 1796, 1799, 1800, as well as star inlays. Brass and steel, wool baize playing surface.

						A rare american federal three part mahogany dining table, probably philadelphia, circa 1800,comprised of dense and solid &quot;island&quot; figured top, veneered skirt, three pedestals with saber legs ending in the original brass casters. Although this form was produced in significant numbers in great britain, it is a relatively rare form of american furniture. The secondary woods, by microanalysis, are ash and white pine, which clearly indicates the continent of origin. The table was most likely made in the philadelphia area, as it has a history of ownership in a family of prominence in that city, however, it may have also been made in the new york vicinity, or even possibly charleston. Condition: the table retains all its original lock, hinges, and the majority of the original late eighteenth century hand-wrought screws. The finish is very early, possibly original, and has been conserved with several coats of shellac to the top and an application of microcrystalline wax. Dimensions: height 27 1/2&quot;, length 102&quot;, width 44 1/2&quot;

						&acirc;&euro;&oelig;an exceptionally fine and rare english neo-classical giltwood looking glass, circa 1770-1800&acirc;&euro;&sup3;

this mirror typifies the work of the leading british neo-classical architect and designer, robert adam (1728-1792), who was born in kirkcaldy, fife, scotland and later moved to edinburgh, where he trained under his father, who was an architect there. After travelling to france and italy for his &acirc;&euro;&oelig;grand tour&acirc;&euro; in 1754-1758, where he met and studied the works of charles-louis clerisseau and giovanni battista piranesi, robert adam returned to great britain and together with his brother, james, the adams brothers created a partnership in london that designed architecture, interiors, furniture, metalworks, carpets, chimney-pieces for the most elite households in the united kingdom in the last decades of the eighteenth century. The style &acirc;&euro;adamesque&acirc;&euro; was based on greco-roman motifs and well-known for its light and airy restraint, which was a contradiction to earlier designs of the wildly flamboyant baroque. The &acirc;&euro;&oelig;adams&acirc;&euro; style quickly permeated all of europe and eventually influenced north america. This mirror is firmly grounded in what adam&acirc;&euro;&trade;s described as the &acirc;&euro;&oelig;etruscan&acirc;&euro; style, which he adopted, and is defined by its extreme delicacy and intricacy, facilitated by ornamental composition on wires and tracery, almost always accompanied by pendants. Adam was at his best when designing looking glasses, such as the mirror shown here, with a filligree border.

condition: this mirror is in immaculate condition and retains the original &acirc;&euro;&oelig;water gilded&acirc;&euro; surfaces with the beveled mirror plate being the only replacement. The circular &acirc;&euro;&oelig;ghost mark&acirc;&euro; shown in the mirror plate is from flash photography and is not visible when viewed. </td>
						<td>
						A fine american classical mahogany games table, circa 1825-1835
 attributed to baltimore, maryland or eastern, virginia

introduction: a highly ambitious and robustly carved american mahogany classical card or games &acirc;&euro;&oelig;pillar and claw&acirc;&euro; table, attributed to the city of baltimore, maryland, or possibly eastern virginia, circa 1825-1835, with exceptional carved details in a captivating state of original preservation. The present card table comes directly from an estate in st. Joseph, missouri, and has not been made for sale publicly for approximately four decades. Stylistically, this table falls into a grouping of &acirc;&euro;&oelig;foliate&acirc;&euro; and inverted acanthus carved pedestal tables that were made primarily in both philadelphia and baltimore during the years 1815-1835, all of which seem to have derived from plate 69 of the english designer george smith&acirc;&euro;&trade;s &acirc;&euro;&oelig;collection of designs for household furniture&acirc;&euro; published in 1808 with the earliest documented example being a mahogany &acirc;&euro;&oelig;work table&acirc;&euro;, made in philadelphia around 1815 by an unknown cabinetmaker currently in &acirc;&euro;&oelig;the biggs museum of american art&acirc;&euro;, dover, delaware.

object description: this card table is made of very dense and luscious tropical mahogany, which was necessary for the highly refined carvings found throughout its&acirc;&euro;&trade; base decorations. The top features two leaves of solid mahogany which are joined together with a very unusual brass hinge that appears in the rear of the leaves, rather than at the sides, as is normally encountered. This abnormal and idiosyncratic detail in the tables&acirc;&euro;&trade; construction may suggest authorship to a specific workshop. The tables&acirc;&euro;&trade; top features &acirc;&euro;&oelig;canted&acirc;&euro; corners and a veneered mahogany skirt that is inwardly coved in a manner typical of philadelphia and baltimore practices of the classical era. The top rotates and pivots to reveal a solid &acirc;&euro;&oelig;playing&acirc;&euro; surface and contains a pocket drawer which was meant to conceal playing cards and other accoutrements when not in use.

the pedestal base is embellished with a downward drooping leafage emanating from an urn pedestal that is orthodoxically ringed with some form of similar carving, in this incidence, further leafage, suggesting a cascading waterfall. The distinguished and unexpected high knees of the table, in concert with a round, instead of a rectangular platform, and attenuated &acirc;&euro;&oelig;lion&acirc;&euro;&trade;s paw&acirc;&euro; found on this card table is atypical of philadelphia pedestal tables of any form, and is more often encountered in the pieces from the city of baltimore and further west. A &acirc;&euro;&oelig;pillar and claw&acirc;&euro; rent or center mahogany table owned by sumpter priddy, iii, gallery with a virtually indistinguishable mid-pedestal and other similarities, is attributed to the workshop of john erhart rose, a philadelphia trained cabinetmaker who ventured westward to open a workshop in abingdon, virginia (see: &acirc;&euro;&oelig;art &amp; antiques&acirc;&euro; summer 2010), therefore, an attribution to his shop is not a stretch, but the secondary materials of this card table are ash and poplar, and do not include the distinct use walnut, as does the rose table.

attributtion: an impromptu glance at the table from the casual collector would suggest philadelphia as the most likely place of manufacture, however, this card table has several merits that virtually eliminate that city as a suspect. The three fundamental elements that prevent a philadelphia attribution are the circular platform base, the pronounced high knees accented the legs and the attenuated &acirc;&euro;&oelig;lions paw&acirc;&euro; foot. Philadelphia forms were undoubtedly the inspiration for the table&acirc;&euro;&trade;s pedestal, but new york city work certainly influenced the feet, which are far less closely related to philadelphia examples from documented forms from cabinetmakers there, such as anthony quervelle, charles and john white, and michael bovier and much more aligned with feet found on furniture, particularly card tables, from new york&acirc;&euro;&trade;s best cabinteshops, most notably, charles h. Lannuier and duncan phyfe. This fact is not at all disconcerting, as much of the furniture made in maryland and eastern virginia looked to forms made in new york during the early and late classical era for its design direction. In fact, on june 28th, 1817, john howe&acirc;&euro;&trade;s &acirc;&euro;&oelig;baltimore carpet, furniture, and looking glass warehouse&acirc;&euro; advertised &acirc;&euro;&oelig;sideboards of boston, new york, and baltimore styles&acirc;&euro; for sale which helps demonstrate baltimore&acirc;&euro;&trade;s inhabitants consciousness and acknowledgement of the most fashionable designs permeating the thriving city&acirc;&euro;&trade;s populous. In 1793 new york lawyer, james kent had noted that baltimore had experienced &acirc;&euro;&oelig;the most rapid growth of any town&acirc;&euro; in the united states.

several of baltimore premier cabinetmaker&acirc;&euro;&trade;s could have made the table, however, none which is fully documented can be established, a fact which does not diminish the table&acirc;&euro;&trade;s virtues whatsoever. This table, in particular, is so inordinate and unique in terms of level of carving and execution of details that it is frustrating to the author that no exact documented example exists. The most documented cabinetmakers working in baltimore at the time of this table&acirc;&euro;&trade;s production were john needles (active 1812-1848), william camp (active 1802-1823) and edward priestley (1803-1835). All three shops were located literally blocks from one another and in the case of camp and priestley, they shared the same street for a time, water street, in baltimore, near the bustling wharves at &acirc;&euro;&oelig;baltimore town&acirc;&euro;.

evaluation: in examination and evaluation of furniture and decorative arts, pieces must first be judged primarily on their aesthetic merits. Great forms exist in abundance without authorship. Likewise, poor substitutes also appear with the presence of definitive genesis. As elusive as he was, whomever authored this card table was a virtuoso and master carver with a broad knowledge of the best neo-classical vocabulary from the baltimore and philadelphia school of cabinetmakers. Most furniture attributions are based widely on structural and stylistic details, a methodology which can produce convincing results, but should be admonished when assessing furniture from broad urban areas as is the case here. In larger cities, it was a common practice for artisans to move, with routine, from workshop to workshop, taking with them their own idiosyncratic style. Subsequently, styles migrated quickly from city to city, making such attributions problematic.

condition: exceptional. The finish was tested and found to be original, cleaned to remove all the accumulated impurities with non-invasive solvents, and then polished to reveal its original splendor and radiant mahogany, just as the maker intended.

						&acirc;&euro;&oelig;an exceptional french louis xvi style ormolu-mounted and marble-topped center table, circa 1890&acirc;&euro;&sup3;

this desk has been consigned from a local estate and is a virtual mate to a desk made for marie-antoinette for her bed-chamber at the &acirc;&euro;&oelig;chateau de saint cloud&acirc;&euro;
