Linear incisions ornament the vessel's body. This type was most probably used to hold prefumes or smaller precious objects. Eisenberg. similar to an oinochoe, an olpe was a jug intended to serve wine at symposia. a note about the michigan painter: he was the most prolific painter of ancient greek pottery. His favorite subjects were those seen on this olpe, (atheletic youths), as well as banquets and scenes of konos, (drunken dance), and occasional mythological subjects. The michigan painter is very close to another attic vase painter of the same period, the beaune painter. These two painters make up beazley's,(sir john beazley is the one who created the beazley archive at the university of oxford for the entire greek vase production eras), perizoma group, so named beacuse of the perizoma (or lion cloths) worn by some athletes and revelers on their vases. A stamnos, painted by the michigan painter, (7 1/2 inches), sold at bonhams antiquities auction for $108,000, (lot 193, bohams london auction, 28 october 2009).

The back of this bust is hollowed for fitting, with original iron pin for attachment. antinos, a beautiful youth and a favorite companion of hadrian. He was a native in the town of bithynum, in bithynia. His beauty led the emperor to take him as his companion in all his journeys. In 132 ad, and while hadrian was staying in egypt, antinos drowned in the nile. Hadrian himself said that antinos fell in the nile by accident. Hadrian's grief knew no bounds, and on the spot where antinos drawned, (the site of the ancient town of besa), he built a city named antinopolis, and he also built antinoea temples in egypt and several parts of greece. A number of statues were built in his memory, the constellation is among those which bears his name till today, there also numerous busts and reliefs that were made after him, and some of those figures were idealized into that of a beautiful bacchus. The over life size dimensions suggests that it was part of a monumental figure. This head is turned slightly upwards, with short beard, long moustache, large eyes, eyebrows in relief, and furrowed brow. His hair is surmounted by a massive wreath of oak leaves. According to maxwell anderson, contributor to: glories of the past, "the incremental abstraction of third century portraiture takes a penultimate step with this imposing likeness. The eyes do not betray the sitter's psychology, but instead, stare upwards vacantly. Naturalism is no longer the primary goal of the sculptor. Contrary to earlier realistic greek and roman art since the 5th century bc., art during the third century became primarily symbolic and secondarily representational. The official embrace of christianity under the emperor constantine, (ad 306- 337), accelerated the process.
