• a short history of the brampton potties:
collectors are probably familiar with the label 'brampton ware' as referring to the more ornate sprig decorated pieces such as puzzle jugs, toast racks, jugs, teapots and coffee pots, made from an almost white clay which gives a light honey surface and in good examples vivid orange peel colouring in a salt firing. However the brampton potteries also made pots with a dark brown colour more usually associated with pottery made in nottingham. In the eighteenth century, nottingham had become so famous for its finely made brown pottery, that 'nottingham ware' became the generic name for all dark brown saltglaze made in the midlands, although no items can be attributed to nottingham after 1800.

the brampton potteries made types of ware that were very similar to each other, but individual factories also specialised in particular lines. Large quantities of bottles, kegs and barrels, jam jars, stew and saucepots, storage jars, flat dishes, turtle and beef pots, bowls, pudding moulds, colanders and water filters were produced, besides the rare and in some cases very rare ornamental pieces such as toby jugs, ink wells, figurines etc... Only a few pieces of brampton ware are marked and therefore individual pots are difficult to attribute to specific factories. The issue is further confused by the fact that the potteries worked co-operatively and might contract work to another factory in the area if they received a large order, and in some instances workmen would move from one factory to another.

•	short history:

much of the collector interest in european ceramics from the early 20th century has been focused on western european countries, but a major art pottery movement reflecting the design elements of the art nouveau (jugensdtil) and secession periods during which it arose was burgeoning in what was then known as bohemia. Traditionally, amphora referred to large greek storage vessels with an oval body, usually tapering toward the base, and with two handles extending from just below the lip to the shoulder. However, the area of central europe now part of austria and czechoslovakia produced a very fine art pottery also known as amphora from the late 19th century until the early 20th century. Amphora employed very innovative shapes including figurals especially during the art nouveau period when their female busts were sometimes monumental and reflected a level of detail very seldom seen in porcelain manufacturing. Amphora works also incorporated animals into their designs including serpents, parrots, and dragons, and other styles were unique to the amphora manufacturers such as the "drop edge candle vase". Amphora designs began with a drawing or watercolor which captured the desired finish look of the piece, and once the design committee had given approval to the design it was given a style number which was subsequently impressed or inscribed on the bottom of amphora works. Many amphora designs were produced in a variety of sizes, with the larger and more substantial being more complex to make and commanding higher prices originally. As such, the larger size pieces such as female busts are less common since they were less affordable during their original production, so they are consequently rarer and more desirable for collectors.
generally recognized as the first and arguably the best of the amphora manufacturers, reissner, stellmacher & kessel was established in the turn-teplitz region of bohemia in 1892. Partners hans and carl reissner, edward stellmacher, and rudolf kessel after kessel took over the remaining factories of alfred stellmacher. This area of central europe was close to dresden, germany and benefited from the long tradition of ceramics manufacturing among the peoples of eastern germany. The ceramics reissner and his 2 partners produced was known for its unique styles and the interesting glazes they used to create what became known as "amphora" pottery or simply "teplitz." reissner, stellmacher & kessel (r. St. K.) displayed their work in america for the first time at the 1893 chicago world's fair where they were awarded a best in show prize and first attracted the attention of the american buying public. In 1897, r. St. K. Produced began art pottery vases in the style of grueby and rookwood, but with more elaborate and art nouveau and jugensdtil influenced designs. The partners reissner, stellmacher, and kessel enjoyed business and artistic success and again took top honors at the st. Louis world's fair in 1904, but in 1905 at which time stellmacher left the firm to establish his own company under his own name. The original firm continued to operate as the reissner & kessel amphora works and operated as such until kessel also left in 1910. Subsequently, the original firm operated under the business name amphora werke reissner while stellmacher continued in operation only until 1912. Amphora werke reissner continued to produce fine amphora art pottery through the art deco period and the years of world war ii, at which time it was nationalized by the czechoslovakian government in 1945. There were many other amphora manufacturers who established operations in the turn-teplitz region, while imitators emerged elsewhere such as the zsolnay factory in pecs, hungary which went on to create some innovative designs of their own.
in addition to reissner, stellmacher, and kessel marked works, one also sees very high quality works which were produced at the imperial technical school for ceramics & associated applied arts from which many of the amphora designers and artisans graduated. Created in 1885 and continuing in operation through world war i until 1917, the school was a decorative arts and design academy which taught students how to sculpt clay in a manner that was both complex in technique and reflective of "themes" such as nature which was so influencing the art nouveau period. The manufacturers of the region benefited from the supply of talent produced at the school, and they contributed to its operation by providing lecturers and raw materials including clay with which the students worked. In the waltraud neuwirth book art nouveau in blossom: austria, a 1908 report describes the curriculum at the school as including "a plant in a given space, to be put into a stylized representation, with consideration for an effective special distribution. Model an animal in a stylized shape. Design a simple vessel with handle and plastic decoration represented in relief. Line up plant motifs to form a frieze and represent them plastically. Design and model a flower pot employing flow glazes. Sketch a figure (nude) after a live model."
ernst wahliss of turn-wein, austria was another early amphora art pottery designer who enjoyed success beyond the confines of europe, and wahliss produced between 1897 and 1906 some of the most beautiful female art nouveau busts which are highly sought by collectors today given their beauty and technical complexity. Wahliss was somewhat unique among the amphora manufacturers for having established his own retail shops in london and vienna. Another well known, high quality amphora manufacturer was the firm of julius dressler whose manufacturing operation was founded in belia, bohemia in 1883 and operated until 1944. During the early 20th century, bohemia was part of the fading austrian-hungarian empire. Amphora was sold in the united states by finer decorating shops including louis comfort tiffany of new york, who appreciated the innovative, hand crafted designs, vibrant colors, and unique glazes used by the amphora manufacturers from turn-teplitz, bohemia- now the town of trovany in czechoslovakia. Amphora works from this period were extraordinarily complex in manufacturing technique, often requiring as many as 10 firings, a series of decorators, and finishers to did the final style flourishes like gilding. Almost all european amphora art pottery produced during this period was marked with various amphora and factory marks including style numbers and in many cases artist's signatures such as paul dachsel whose "pd" marks decorated some of the work emanating from reissner, stellmacher, & kessel from 1892 to 1905. Dachsel himself left reissner in 1905 at the same time as edward stellmacher to form his own firm "pd turn-teplitz."

a similar silenus jug is in the victoria & albert, london collection, and is on display in the british galleries (room 122f, case 4.) the piece was given to the v&a by the commisioners of the great exhibition of 1851.

the victoria & albert description:
design & designing
minton's designed the 'silenus' jug in about 1831 and it proved to be one of their most popular earlier designs, to such an extent that it was copied by mason and by doulton. It was first issued in light green, then dark green. This blue version is model number 235. Minton even issued the jug in an experimental pre-parian version though this is quite rare.

subject depicted
silenus was a god of bacchus' retinue. A merry, rotund old drunkard, he was nevertheless credited with wisdom and prophetic powers. He is usually shown leading bacchus' triumphal procession, on an ass and supported by satyrs.

An extremely rare political 'no surrender' staffordshire nursary plate, transfer
decorated with a statue of william iii on horseback with the words:
william iii - no surrender -
having also a moulded floral border, a transfer floral laural and handed applied coloured
dots
circa: early 19th century
origin: uk
mark: none
provenance:
private estate / ireland
condition: good - slight discolouration to edge (see image)

no surrender!’
on 7th december 1688 13 apprentice boys had closed the gates of derry against the forces of king james ii. The mayor expelled remaining catholics from the city and issued this proclamation:
'we have resolved to stand upon our guard and to defend our walls, and not to admit of any papists whatsoever to quarter amongst us.'
on 22nd march king james arrived from france with a large professional army sent by louis xiv. Meanwhile the jacobites – those who remained loyal to king james – were sweeping northwards.
on 14th march 1689 the protestant gentlemen who had declared for william of orange suffered crushing defeat in co down in what became known as the ‘break of dromore’. Lisburn, belfast and antrim fell without a fight and after a brisk engagement in a snow storm, the coleraine garrison pulled west to derry. On the other side of ulster the men of enniskillen with their long fowling pieces kept the jacobites at a respectful distance.
meanwhile, from all over the north, protestants poured into derry. In addition to a garrison of over 7,000 men, perhaps 30,000 colonists sought sanctuary in the city. In a very real sense, therefore, the fate of the protestant settlement in ulster depended on derry’s ability to hold out. In april men from the derry garrison were overwhelmed by french and irish troops. Driven out of their trenches at lifford and cladyford, the protestant foot soldiers were hacked down, while their cavalry support ignominiously galloped in retreat to derry. Thomas ash recorded in his diary that the williamites had been beaten
'although we were five to one against them, which caused suspicion that colonel lundy was a traitor to our cause.'
when lieutenant-colonel robert lundy, the governor of derry, refused the support of two regiments sent out from liverpool, that suspicion became a certainty. The citizens revolted, overthrew lundy, and appointed as joint governors in his place major henry baker and the reverend george walker, church of ireland rector of donaghmore. They were to provide inspired leadership and they both humanely allowed lundy to slip away over the walls disguised as a common soldier.
what were the prospects of a successful resistance? Walker recalled:
'we had but few horse to sally out with and no forage; no engineers to instruct us in our works; no fireworks, not so much as a hand-grenado to annoy the enemy; nor a gun well mounted in the town.'
well-mounted or not, some of the guns were impressive enough. The largest was ‘roaring meg’, given to the city in 1642 by the fishmongers’ company. And there was no shortage of powder and handguns.
exhilarated by the victory at the fords, king james joined his besieging army. On 18th april he advanced twoards the walls and offered terms. He was greeted with cries of
'no surrender!'
this was followed by a sustained barrage of shot and ball. Just out of range, james sat motionless on his horse for several hours in the pouring rain. The king was persuaded to return to dublin where the french ambassador observed that
'his majesty appears to me to be very mortified over his latest proceeding.'
the jacobites were badly equipped for a long siege. One french supply officer reported that
'most of the soldiers in front of derry have still only pointed sticks, without iron tips.'
a regiment inspected by the king had only one matchlock in a hundred fit for service. A single mortar was the only artillery piece the besiegers possessed. More heavy guns arrived later but they were not sufficient to attempt a breach of the walls except at very close quarters. Indeed, the defenders made several audacious sallies from the city, in which two french generals were mortally wounded.
the defenders had entrenched themselves on a hillock to the west of the city, where a windmill stood. The jacobite general, richard hamilton, resolved to drive them back, as one of his [irish] officers recalled:
'this work they well manned with firelocks, and planted two or three small pieces of cannon on the windmill. General hamilton, observing that the rebels made a walking place of this entrenched ground for the good of their health, and that they gave great annoyance with their cannon from the said mill and with their long fowling-pieces… whereupon he commanded, on the sixth of may, an attack to be made on the entrenchment.'
the jacobite assault was a complete failure. As an alternative strategy hamilton drew the net tighter by moving the main jacobite camp forward, cutting the city off from much of its water supply. Just downstream, the french constructed a boom, made of fir beams fastened with chains, to stretch across the foyle. Derry was now completely cut off.

A very good quality and very fine silver plated breakfast dish and liners by william padley & son
this breakfast dish has all the fine detailing one usually looks for; wonderfully
formed legs, engraved top dome and great proportion, certainly one of the best i have had for many years.

the opened edge has fine gadrooning (in line with the drip pan which similarly also has slightly different sized gadrooning - the top dome has very fine engraved flora and the open work art nouveau swirls in the leg design well suite
this quality dish. Stood on four flat pad feet. 2x internal liners.
the ivory finial looks like it is a later replacement and doesn't unscrew - there is also
a horizontal scrarch in the top dome where it has caught the lip during opening and closing - nothing serious and very light, just mentioning these for accuracy
- this is a great dish in very good condition

no surrender!’
on 7th december 1688 13 apprentice boys had closed the gates of derry against the forces of king james ii.
One french supply officer reported that

the defenders had entrenched themselves on a hillock to the west of the city, where a windmill stood.
Derry was now completely cut off.

wmf - wurttembergische metallwarenfabrik: history
in 1853, daniel straub, a miller from geislingen, joined forces with the schweizer
brothers to form the "metallwarenfabrik straub & schweizer" in geislingen. This
was the second company to be founded by straub - previously in 1850, from the
nucleus of a small repair workshop, which he had set up to work on the construction
of geislingen's famous railway incline, he had founded the maschinenfabrik
geislingen. This company was involved mainly in manufacturing mill turbines and
traded throughout europe.
as early as 1862, the young company distinguished itself by winning a gold medal
at the world exhibition in london. In 1866, following the departure of the brothers
louis and friedrich schweizer, the company was renamed straub & sohn" (straub
& son). The company showroom, built in 1868 in berlin, gradually evolved to
become the company's first retail outlet. Three years later, the company was
already employing 60 workers. By 1880, the number of employees had grown to
approximately 200 and the company was already producing 960 different items.
1880 saw the merger between straub & sohn and "ritter & co.", esslingen, to form
a public limited company under the name of wurttembergische metallwarenfabrik.
at the time of the merger, ritter & co.'s esslingen factory was already using the
electroplating method of silver plating and had the more modern production facilities
at its disposal. Straub's company, on the other hand, was the more profitable of the
two.
1892 saw the development of a special technique for silver plating cutlery, whereby
the silver is distributed in a way that, at the points of the cutlery most exposed to
wear and tear, the coating is twice as thick as elsewhere. This process was
patented and is still in use today. Known nowadays as 'perfect hard silver plating'
the technique remains exclusive to wmf.
under carl hugele the company gained international standing. At the turn of the century
the factory in geislingen employed 3,000 workers. By 1910, this number had already
grown to 4,000, making wmf the largest company in wurttemberg at this time.
sales catalogues were printed in twelve languages. Subsidiary companies in london,
warsaw and vienna opened up export markets.
under the direction of albert mayer the wmf studio was influenced by the art
nouveau style. The product range was modernized and considerably extended.
in 1905 wmf acquired a majority holding of the cologne company orivit ag, which
manufactured products from "orivit", a tin alloy.

An unusual rockingham treacle glazed flask in the shape boot
there is some conjecture as to its use, some saying it was a whiskey or gin flask,
others saying that it would be to large in size to confortably fit into a pocket and
therefore was used as a boot warmer filled with hot sand.
