This magnificent castellani jewel was made somewhere around 1870 and 1880 in, what is called, the castellani's &quot;periodo moderno&quot;, a period in which castellani's master goldsmith and designer michelangelo caetani, was strongly focussed on designing micro mosaic jewelry with greek and latin text.

theme: ey - although not obvious on first sight, these are not latin but greek letters. The letters ey stand for &quot;good health&quot; but one could also say it's the abbreviation for &quot;eternally yours&quot;.

monogram: castellani (see pictures for the famous castellani hallmark - two mirrored c's)

hallmarks: none, besides the castellani sign

fortunato pio castellani (6 may 1794 - 1 january 1865) was a 19th century italian jeweller and founder of castellani, an italian jewellery company. Castellani opened his first shop in rome in 1814. He specialised in recreating the jewellery of ancient craftsmen, particularly the etruscans. Castellani based many of his designs directly on archaeological evidence and often incorporated intaglios, cameos and micromosaics into his jewellery. His work became very fashionable throughout 19th century europe and his shop was frequented by grand tourists and aristocracy. The castellani dynasty spanned three generations, and were also noted antiquarians.

An exceptional example of the portuguese bow-knot pendant in a quality we are proud of to present. The exquisite design, excellently executed by highly skilled jewellers is a true joy for the eye. This type of jewel is called a la&Atilde;&sect;a bow-knot. The abundantly used diamonds and heavy gold metal work can make us only wonder what high class noble lady this jewel belonged to.

this piece has to be worn on a short ribbon around the neck.

details:

diamonds: no less than 46 (!) table cut rose cut diamonds and one high domed rose cut diamond . We do not have the weight of the diamonds which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cuts. The rose cuts are set on foil. This is a special technique that was used to bring the lustre of the diamonds to its best quality.

material: warm yellow gold 18k (and most likely of a higher alloy)

style: renaissance

style specifics: typically portuguese 17th century

period: ca. 1650

condition: extremely good condition

source of inspiration: one may note the inspiration of a textile bow, the maker of this object had to make it into a bejewelled bow, revealed by very fine lace copied on to the precious metal on the top outlines of two loops. Bow jewelry, the style of jewel of gold and diamonds which originated from the bows and ribbons worn on garments, was a very sophisticated and popular source of inspiration in portuguese jewelry.

dimensions: height 8.10 cm (3.19 inch), width 4.00 cm (1.57 inch)

weight: 29.60 gram (19.03 dwt)

reference n&Acirc;&ordm;: 12055-0015

the renaissance (italian: rinascimento, from ri- &quot;again&quot; and nascere &quot;be born&quot;) was a cultural movement that spanned roughly the 14th to the 17th century, beginning in florence in the late middle ages and later spreading to the rest of europe. The term is also used more loosely to refer to the historic era, but since the changes of the renaissance were not uniform across europe, this is a general use of the term. As a cultural movement, it encompassed a resurgence of learning based on classical sources, the development of linear perspective in painting, and gradual but widespread educational reform. Traditionally, this intellectual transformation has resulted in the renaissance being viewed as a bridge between the middle ages and the modern era. Although the renaissance saw revolutions in many intellectual pursuits, as well as social and political upheaval, it is perhaps best known for its artistic developments and the contributions of such polymaths as leonardo da vinci and michelangelo, who inspired the term &quot;renaissance man&quot;.

A truly magnificent piece with royal pretentions. Set with exact one hunderd diamonds, one gigantic rose cut in the center of the pendant and 99 other rose cut diamonds around it. Reflecting the grandeur of the grand victorian period at its best.

this jewel can be worn in several manners, as brooch or as two types of pendants. When worn as pendant it can be either only with the loop ring attached to the oval pendant or with the bow between the loop ring and the oval pendant (see the pictures for this). When worn as a pendant, it is possible to easily unscrew the pin of the back of the brooch. And due to a charming hinge system the hook at the back of the oval (that holds the pin when worn as a brooch) can be smoothly clapped flat against the backside of the oval pendant, allowing the jewel to hang smoothly flat.

details:

country of origin: although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe this to be of french or belgian origin.

era: victorian, the grand victorian period - experts divide the reign of queen victoria, also called the victorian era (1837 - 1901) into three periods of about twenty years each; the romantic victorian period (1837 - 1860), the grand victorian period (1860 - 1880), and the late or aesthetic victorian period (1880 - 1901). We consider this to be of the grand victorian period. This second victorian period is famous for its ostentatious pieces set with pearls and diamonds (from south africa). From ca. 1850 wealthy english had reported about jewelry from india and japan, which heavily inspired the jewelers of this period. This period also corresponds with the death of queen victoria's husband king albert making mourning jewelry (set with heavy dark stones) the type of jewelry specific for this period.

period: ca. 1870

condition: excellent condition

theme: multi layered oval dangling under a bow (a bow is an ornamental knot made out of a ribbon)

material: 18k red gold and silver

technique: the rose cuts are set on foil. This is a special technique that was used to bring the lustre of the diamonds to its best quality.

diamonds: one truly gigantic rose cut diamond. Though we do not have the weight of this diamond (which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cuts) we roughly estimate the weight of this carbuncle at an approximate 2,50 to 3,00 carat. The dimensions of this stone are approximately 1,30 cm (0,51 inch) x 0,95 cm (0,37 inch).

the quality of this huge stone is high, close to perfect for a stone this age. With the bare eye its looks flawless but with a loupe (magnifying 10 times) one can see a small inclusion at 4 o'clock. The color of this stone is also in the higher whiter regions, but hard to determine because the stone is foil set (like all the stones in this jewel). A modern oval brilliant cut diamond of these dimensions would weigh an approximate 5.00 carat!

the big stone is accompanied by no less than 99 rose cut diamonds. We do not have the weight of the diamonds which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cuts.

note: all diamond weights, color grades and clarity are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.

dimensions: total height when dangling under bow 5,78 cm (2,28 inch)

weight: 22,60 gram

Actually it is both a necklace and tiara the same time. A tiara is a head ornament usualy worn by royal and noble ladies on formal occasions. Tiaras are usually a curved vertical band with a central peak, all encrusted with diamonds or other gemstones. In the victorian era some tiaras were made so that the central part could be detached from its framework and worn as a necklace. Such is the case with this piece of high class antique jewelry.

when it was offered to us, both the tiara's framework as well as the part that would close the tiara to make it into a necklace were missing. So we had to make the neck-part our selves. We did it in such a way that the original design was respected and in a reversable way. In the jewelbox, beneath the presentation part for the tiara, there is still in a special dedicated place the little screw driver and small gold screw that were used to fix the tiara to its frame. (see pictures)

it comes in its original box from a jeweller to the belgian court (see pictures). The interior of the box reads in gold letters:
maison jean dufour fres
auguste dufour
joaillier de l.L.M.M.
le roi &amp; la reine

This archaeological-revival gold necklace features a filigree decoration, which is in fact thin golden wire twisted into refined motifs, in this case elegant little balls. You can also notice the use of granulation on this piece. Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. Both techniques demand very high skills and precision from the maker. The continuous uniform fringe decorated with beads, wirework and florettes of this necklace is typical for the work of eugne fontenay.
a demi-parure of very similar design is illustrated in french jewelry of the nineteenth century, henri vever, translated by katherine purcell, p. 643. And a similar necklace plus matching earrings were sold at sotheby's for $ 52,000 (important jewels auction, new york, february 2008 sale n08410, lot 110).

eugne fontenay (1823-87) was one of the foremost goldsmiths in france during the second half of the nineteenth century. He was a great admirer of the ancient techniques of granulation and filigree, and became best known for his outstanding work in the 'archaeological' era. Fontenay was no doubt inspired by the campana collection of ancient jewellery, acquired by napoleon iii in 1860, and his firm produced much work in the antique era based on greek, roman and etruscan examples.

fontenay was a founding member of the chambre syndicale de la bijouterie-joaillerie-orfvrerie in paris and was awarded the cross of the l(c)gion d'honneur as a member of the jury at the vienna exhibition in 1873 as a result of his masterly report on the goldsmiths' and silversmiths' work. In 1882, fontenay retired and devoted his time to publishing numerous articles on jewelry, as well as working on his masterpiece, les bijoux anciens et modernes, published posthumously in 1887.

A truly magnificent art nouveau enamelled brooch. Most probably created in france at the end of the nineteenth century this brooch is made in rose coloured gold and has two old mine cut brilliant diamonds of 0.15 carat, a rose cut diamond in the flower and a very nice hanging pearl.

in a process known as plique a jour the translucent enamel is actually fired in between thin wires of gold, a process that has been masterfully used to dramatic effect on the delicately veined wings of this brooch. The subtle enamelling on the flower and the discreet colour transition behind the face make this sought-after jewel a true collectors item.

although plique a jour enamel is delicate by its very nature this piece is eminently wearable. Thanks to the later addition of a loop on the back it can be worn, either as a brooch or a pendant and in the right setting it would make a truly noble conversation piece.

thanks to a discreetly placed ring system in the back, this jewel can also be worn either as a brooch or as a pendant.

a very similar jewel is depicted on picture # 30 in the book &quot;art nouveau jewelry&quot; by vivienne becker (1985, thames and hudson, isbn 0-525-24345-3)

Object d'art - french antique victorian object depicting aesop's fable... Every now and then we run into a piece that is the cherry on our antique jewelry cake. Such is the case with this piece. So much to see, the story behind it, so much to find out about and the pleasure of holding something in your hands showing such high level of craftsmanship.... One of the true pleasures in our trade.

we hope you will enjoy looking and learning about this piece as much as we did!

details of this stork ring:

country of origin: france
era/period: victorian, ca. 1850-1870
condition: excellent condition, no trace of wear

technique: the stork is skillfully modeled and engraved in silver that has been richly and yet tastefully embellished with gold accents. See the stork's crest, beak, claws, tale, and the outlines of the wings.

material: 18k yellow gold and silver
hallmarks: the ring is hallmarked with the french control mark for 18k gold representing an eagle's head that was in use in france from about 1838. We couldn't find any hallmarks on the stork.
master goldsmith: although we couldn't find any master mark in the stork, it is because of the level of craftsmanship that we think that this could have been made by the house froment-meurice.

precious stones: one big baroque pearl used as the jar that the stork is holding, one seed pearl at the outside of the bottom of the &quot;jar&quot;. Two little cabochon cut stones, one onyx and one turquoise

dimensions: 1.46 inch
ring size us: 6&Acirc;&frac34; (free re-sizing)
weight: 17.30 gram

it is almost certain that this piece of art started as a decoration for another, even more, impressive piece. The way the ring to hold it, looks rather simple on first sight but we fully understand and support the way of thinking of the goldsmith who made it. It respects the original piece of art by a master goldsmith and does not alter it in any way. That is why we decided to offer it in the same manner as we found it.

aesop's fable: &quot;the fox and the stork&quot;:

at one time the fox and the stork were on visiting terms and seemed very good friends. So the fox invited the stork to dinner, and for a joke put nothing before her but some soup in a very shallow dish. This the fox could easily lap up, but the stork could only wet the end of her long bill in it, and left the meal as hungry as when she began.

&quot;i am sorry,&quot; said the fox, &quot;the soup is not to your liking.&quot; &quot;pray do not apologize,&quot; said the stork. &quot;i hope you will return this visit, and come and dine with me soon.&quot;

so a day was appointed when the fox should visit the stork; but when they were seated at table all that was for their dinner was contained in a very long-necked jar with a narrow mouth, in which the fox could not insert his snout, so all he could manage to do was to lick the outside of the jar.

&quot;i will not apologize for the dinner,&quot; said the stork: &quot;one bad turn deserves another.&quot;

Antique french brooch, high quality craftsmanship, enamel swan bird on a diamonds lake, reemace or cattail motifs and floral pattern. Fine three-dimensional work in 18 carat yellow gold, the diamonds are set in silver to render the true beauty of the precious stones. The brooch is set with no less than 66 rose cut diamonds.

the jewel in excellent condition, pin and security system work perfectly, the enamel presents some tiny minutes when looking very close; we decided to leave it that way to preserve this true piece of art.

19th century jewellery and artists had used nature as inspiration for designs. Their interpretations of animals in jewels are based on an almost impressionistic view of the colours and lines in realistic detail. The french were undoubtedly unrivalled in the design of jewellery during this period with a deep understanding for the gems and materials used.

it is in french jewellery that the most stunning art nouveau motifs can be found. These 19th century realism jewelry in diamonds, of course, can be very expensive. With careful and imaginative taste, the flowers and swan act as a fascinating theme to link your choice of romantic, symbolic and above all, decorative jewel.

our comment: what a beautiful brooch! Upon the sight of this brooch we all turned instantly happy. What a pretty piece of applied art. Charming, touching, cute, top notch work and design... One of the very nicest pieces we have had in many many years. And it stays nice... Everytime we look at it we are in awe of the quality and its positive impact to our mood.

Without a doubt this must be the nicest pair of filigree earrings we ever had. Hard to tell exactly when they were made but we think somewhere between 1861 and 1886. We do think so because we found some hallmarks that most probably are from the master goldsmith a. Friederichs, who worked between 1861 and 1886 in oudenbosch, the netherlands. Clearly visible we see several motives like the cornucopia (horn of plenty), bird's feathers and per earring five dangling motives that with some imagination could be hanging birds. This jewel features a filigree decoration, which is in fact thin golden wire twisted into refined motifs, in this case elegant little balls. You can also notice the use of granulation on this piece. Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. Both techniques demand very high skills and precision from the maker.
the combination of the quality of the craftmanship, the extraordinary length, the splendour of design, and their prestine condition make these earrings so special.

What a nice true piece of antique jewelry we have here. If only all antique jewelry could be of this quality! We see a skillful engraved angel (also called a cupid, cherub or putto) with wings playing a flute in a shell-like background. To recognize the quality of the engraver only take a look at the cute little feet of the angel (see the pictures for a close-up). The cameo is cut in hardstone, a technique even more difficult then the usual shell where cameo's are cut from.
the cameo is set in a wreath covered with diamonds and further embellished with 19 natural pearls. Pure eye-candy, a joy to look at, not to mention the pleasure owning and wearing it.

It's an intriguing object of beauty. The tiara has a screw system that allows you to (un)screw the wings and place them on a brooch. At the back of the tiara there is a system in which you can click either the white ostrich or the colorful peacock feather with a little golden cone that holds a feather.
the tiara is made around 1890 in netherlands in 18 high carat rose gold with dutch hallmarks. It holds 116 rose cut diamonds, in the wings 55 each and the tiara skeleton has another six rose cut diamonds. We do not have the weight of the diamonds which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cuts.

with the tiara-skeleton and brooch-skeleton came two pins. We are not sure if they belong to the tiara nor are we sure how the system would work that should attach the wings or the tiara to the pins, but we decided to leave them with it and let the next owner worry about it (or not).

since we understand that there can be an &quot;urge&quot; to wear this tiara when in possession, we made a system that allows you to wear it. We made it in gold and used a black elastic wide band. But a skilled goldsmith could easily custom-make one into a smaller white band.

the whole set comes in the box we bought it in that has a name in the inside. The name is h.B.Lohman, juwelier (dutch for jeweler) in the gravenstraat 2b, den haag (the hague &acirc;&euro;&ldquo; netherlands). It is not sure though that this is the maker, it could also only refer to the seller.

What a bracelet! The star sapphire in its center is something we hardly ever see, we couldn't stop playing with it in the sunlight. This is how one wants to have a victorian bracelet with a cabochon cut star sapphire and 86 rose cut diamonds to look like. The overall impression of this beauty is impressive, we are not even sure its splendour is caught well on the pictures.

the bracelet is mostly in 18k gold but the center part is silver on top and backed with 18k yellow gold. The gold is stamped with the french control mark for 18k gold representing an eagle's head that was in use in france from about 1838 and the french control mark representing an rhinoceros' head that was in use in france from about 1847.

let's start looking at the master mark in this piece. We see an &quot;l&quot; and a &quot;g&quot; which was the &quot;poi&Atilde;&sect;on de ma&Atilde;&reg;tre&quot; (french for &quot;master mark&quot;) for l&Atilde;&copy;on gariod. This company was established by gaucher and tonnelier in 1859. Gaucher became the sole owner in 1869 and started a partnership with gariod in 1875 who took over the company in 1884. The company with its address in rue st. Augustin 29 in paris became specialized in articulated bracelets and mat gold chains with precious stones.

what's interesting about this company is that they worked very closely together with l.Gautrait, an illuster jeweller of the art nouveau period of who not much, if any, biographical information is known. According to vever (who wrote the &quot;bible&quot; for antique jewelers around 1900), gautrait was a &quot;ciseleur-modeleur&quot; and fid&Atilde;&uml;le collaborateur&quot; of the parisian jewellers l&Atilde;&copy;on gariod. Vever characterised his collegue as an &quot;excellent perfectionistic jeweller with a delicate taste&quot;.

vever continues: &quot;these simple yet decorative jewels were meticulously made and extremely popular. With his attractive brooches and his pendants of contemporary or traditional inspiration, gariod's work has attracted a great deal of attention. With his faithful collaborator m.(...M and not l ! - adin) designs and chases these creations, characterized by their great refinement.

						<td>
A truly magnificent piece we have here. A cameo that is cut in such a meticulous and skillful way that we just couldn't stop looking at it; every time we discovered something new to gaze at. If you want to know if a cameo is of good quality you don't look at the flyaway veiles and voiles or curly haireras. You don't because those give the artist the liberty to make it as he wants. No, one has to look at the faces and hands and when those are realistic then the artist is good. With this cameo, although the faces are really small (and therefore harder to make realistic) they are not just good, they are terrific and showing the hand of a true master engraver.

the artist took his inspiration from a ceiling fresco by guido reni, done in 1613-1614. This fresco, a monumental work that meisures 280 cm (110 inch) x 700 cm (275 inch), can be found in a palace in rome &acirc;&euro;&oelig;the palazzo pallavicini-rospigliosi&acirc;&euro; built by the borghese family on the quirinal hill. It depicts aurora, the roman goddess of dawn as she leads the sun god apollo on his chariot and surrounded by the horae, in bringing daylight into the world. We added a picture of the original fresco. Guido reni (1575-1642) was an italian painter, draughtsman and etcher. He was one of the greatest and most influential of the 17th-century italian painters, whose sophisticated and complex art dominated the bolognese school. An artist deeply influenced by greco-roman art and by raphael.

although we believe the mounting of this cameo to be french the chance that the cameo is also french we think is rather small; we believe it to be italian. It was not uncommon in those days that specialized workshops just made cameo's that they would export; a process that actually still exists in our days. Since the cameo is made after a fresco it wouldn't make much sense trying to find period specific characteristics on it. Therefore we have to study the mounting thoroughly. Easiest would be if it there were hallmarks giving away the date. Unfortunately they are unfindable. The only mark we found is most probably a master mark, and to find out who owned that mark is like finding a needle in a haystack. We added a picture of this master mark.

when looking at the characteristics of the mounting it has clear signs of the baroque period. Only problem we have here is that the baroque period lasted roughly 150 years, from 1600 till 1750 and that we found a french hallmark depicting a ram's head. This mark was in use since 1817.

the piece was most probably part of a tiara or belt. There are braces at the back of the piece through which a ribbon can be lead. There is also a little hole with screw wire at the bottom of the piece, we think that this is the part where the mounting could have been attached to the skeleton of a tiara.

Its long slender wings are set with no less then 38 old european cut diamonds 1.65 carats and four beautiful rubies 1.60 carats. It's a true shame that rubies are so hard to photograph because the true color of the rubies is much warmer then shown on the picture. Its body is set with a fresh green colored peridot while its sticklike tail is set with nine demantiods also called green garnets. This type of garnet is the most expensive of its group and the yellowish-green variety of demantoid that is used here is also called &quot;olivine&quot;.

This brooch was offered to us in the shop in the same condition we offer it here too. Made somewhere between 1300 and 1400 (always hard to pin-point exactly). We decided to leave it the same condition as we think that any repair on this jewel won't do it justice.
what do we see? Born as a cross, with a center stone that is either ruby or spinel and three remaining settings, most likely for the same type of stone as the center stone. Three remaining as it is obvious that there was a fourth setting. The little pins sticking out of the center, where most likely meant to keep pearls in its place. We can still see the rubbed ends of the pins, showing a sort of riveting technique. We also think the brooch has been in the ground for a long time, long enough to have the pearls solved.

it still has its original stick pin and closure. Just imagine when people ask you &quot;what strange thing are you wearing?&quot; and you can say that it's a piece that is some 800 years old! A piece with a true charisma!

details:

We are very proud to have this brooch in our collection. Althought the brooch is a stunner by itself, the pearl hanging from the bottom is a once-in-a-life-time pearl to be found. Through the ages, big pear shaped pearls in this quality are a rarity and were worn mostly by royalty and the higher nobility.

because of their rarity and the scarcity of new big natural saltwater pearls coming into the market, prices are climbing year after year. Already in march 2013, at the us auction house skinner in boston a pendant featuring a big natural saltwater pear shaped pearl (and two big diamonds) was sold for almost $ 96,000 (hammer price $ 78,000 + 23% commission).

condition: excellent condition

country of origin: unknown style: belle &Atilde;&permil;poque

period: ca. 1900

material: two tones of precious metal, the main part being 14k yellow gold and the white part is platinum.

diamonds: 77 old european cut and single brilliant cut diamonds (also called 8/8) with a total estimated weight of approx. 4.46 crt.

precious stones: two exceptional beautiful natural saltwater pearls. One button shaped pearl with the dimensions 10.10-10.14 mm width x 8.0 mm thick and one drop shaped pearl with the dimensions 8.10-9.9 mm width x 18mm height. See pictures for certificate of the pearls.

Late 18th century cameo gem-set ring depicting louis xvi and marie antoinette. The layered agate cameo is engraved with the to the right looking profiles of louis xvi and marie-antoinette. The hard stone cameo is surrounded by rose cut diamonds and the top of the cameo has a diamond and ruby set crown.

louis xvi and marie-antoinette got married in 1770, reigned between 1774 and 1789, the year when the french revolution started. They got executed on the guillotine in 1793. During their reign, they got frequently portrayed in miniatures, ceramics and hardstone cameos. As in our days one would receive a signed photograph of a famous person, in those days works with their faces on would be given to their friends, political and diplomatic allies and courtiers. Most of the portraits were just of either the king or queen and double portraits of this kind are therefore rare.

some experts claim that rings like this (we know of the world-wide existence of three similar rings) were made specially with the birth of louis xvi and marie-antoinette's eldest child marie th&Atilde;&copy;r&Atilde;&uml;se of france in 1778. Another factor that could have influenced the scarcity of such rings is that after the revolution possession of such jewelry would have been regarded as evidence of treason.

Rare 18th century diamond and gold ring - french antique ring 18k yellow gold table cut diamonds c.1750.

details:

country of origin: france, tours

style: baroque - baroque is an artistic style prevalent from the late 16th century to the early 18th century in europe. It is most often defined as &quot;the dominant style of art in europe between the mannerist and rococo eras, a style characterized by dynamic movement, overt emotion and self-confident rhetoric&quot;.

period: ca. 1750

condition: excellent condition

material: 18k yellow gold

hallmarks: french hallmarks for the city of tours around 1750 and a typical french control mark representing an owl, we cannot be sure it is actually french as the owl was also used for items in finished condition that were brought to be examined by the french assay office (the eagle&acirc;&euro;&trade;s head was used for items brought in unfinished).

diamonds: seven table cut diamonds set on foil. This is a special technique that was used to bring the lustre of the diamonds to its best quality. We do not have the weight of the diamonds which is normal in our trade when it comes to table cuts. This cut was introduced in the early 15th century and continued until the introduction of the rose cut in the mid-17th century. A later modification has, extending downward from the girdle, 4 triangular facets that meet at a point at the bottom instead of a culet. Such table-cut stones are described as 'thin cut' or 'thick cut', depending upon the depth of the stone.

ring size continental: 58 &amp; 18&Acirc;&frac12; , size us 8&Acirc;&frac14; , size uk: q

resizing: resizing is possible but because of the age of the ring we prefer to leave it untouched. We could make an additional inner ring so the ring itself is not harmed, for this work we have to charge. We cannot guarantee to make it on every size; so please ask in advance.
