This is a good example of its type and is identical in pattern to that on a tankard in the topkapi sarayi museum.
this large dish one of five i will be listing is from a private collection formed in turkey and purchased by me some years ago in istanbul.
the cuerda-seca technique is where the enamels are seperated by small area which has been treated prior to glazing with a resist.
the dish has a diameter of 143/8 in. Or 36.5cm.
it is in good conditioon with on;ly a couple of old chips to the rim,no restoration or breakage or cracks.
canakkale ceramics were made from the 17thc through to the late 19thc in earthernware of a reddish or buff coloured body. The early examples are the best the 19thc pieces are interesting in their variation in design

This is an exceedingly rare piece of canakkale though the design is recognisable from the more usual brown glazed pieces. It would date to the earliest period of thee pottery which is late 17th early 18thc.It is decorated in underglaze blue and brown with a central floral motif and aband of oranges or other fruit, the border is a meandering brown or dark aubergine.
as with all these pieces it is slip glazed on a pottery body in this case a buff colour with a wide flat foot.It is then painted in blue and brown and clear glazed over top.A very attractive piece in good condition with only minor fritting to rim. This is from the same collection as the others i am listing.
the dish of relatively light weight for its size has a diameter of 13 3/4in or 34.5 cm.
these pieces are becoming very sought after but there is still much research to be done on them.As can be seen from the back this has been excavated.

This is a stunning example of an 18thc canakkale large plate or dish.It is as usual slip glazed then painted in an abstract underglaze blue pattern with turquoise areas and brown scrolling.Measuring 16in or 40cm across this piece is in excellent condition with no chipping only some minor frits. There are no repairs or cracks.Again from the same collection this is rather heavy.I suggest that anyone interested in this and the other pieces i am listing check the anomolous pieces from canakkale in the v&a's collection. The canakkale potteries were one of the three major potteries of turkey the other two working in fritware, namely iznik and kutahya.I will be listing a very rare late 19thc kuutahya dish signed by the man who revived the kiln in the 1880's so please have a look over the next few days as i will also be listing some ottoman silver with tughras and other very fine middle eastern silver works.
i am open to any reasonable offers on my listings and will ship anywhere in the world.

This is a fine piece of kutahya by the man who restarted the kilns c 1880.
the kutahya kilns took over from the iznik in the late 17thc as iznik production almost ceased at this date. The works from kutahya were mainly tiles but other practical items were produced.Towards the beginning of the 19thc production at kutahya ceased and was revived in an iznik style decoration by muhammed hilmi effendi. He and his son were totally responsible for the present state of the kilns which are today producing some very fine pieces.
needless to say the pieces such as the one i am selling though very decorative are a little primitive but are also very rare as most of hilmi's production was tiles.
the body of these pieces is a fine fritware with underglaze blue yellow aubergine and a very distntive red identical to the iznik red.
the dish is in good condition with a small restoration to a foot-rim chip.It has no cracks or chips to the body itself and is signed on the base.
i have shown the base of a bottle by the same artist which has been published in a book of his work.
this is an oportunity to own a very rae piece of ottoman art.
the plate has a diameter of 9 7/8in or 25cm.

This is a beautiful item and complete and original. Most one sees are bits and pieces or marriages in fact i have not seen another complete one for sale on the internet or anywhere else for that matter. The chain weighs 410gm and is of high silver content.
it has a matching tughra (the ottoman mark of the current sultan of the period)on every part including the chain.
ottoman silver with tughra is very rare as most was melted down for coinage so only ecclesiastical pieces and pieces owned by the very wealthy and well to do have survived.Of all the antiques it has been suggested one should collect are middle eastern and asian antiques also mughal pieces all of which of quality are becoming rare and prices rising rapidly.I will be listing two other tughra marked pieces and a superb 18thc clerics three sided seal,no tughra but high quality silver.

This is an attractive piece from the canakkale kilns dating from the mid 19thc.As with all of these pieces it shows three spur marks around the central motifs and centre of dishes in this case. These appear as apparently unglazed areas but of reasonably constant shape and are a confirmation amongst many others of the origin of the pieces as all canakkale pieces should have this.
this dish is decorated with flowers in turquoise and brown with an abstract circular design around the border.Unlike the larger pieces this is more dish than large plate shape with a reasonably noticeable upwards edge to it.
the dish in very good condition with an unglazed back and flat foot of reddish body has a diameter of 12.25in and has a depth of 2in or 31cm x 6cm.

This is a lovely large plate by imaemon imaizumi xii in nabeshima style decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels on a very white ground. The reverse is decoated with caash symbols in underglaze blue and his signature.
the technique is such that the floral sprays seem to be coming out of the plate and a very interesting three dimensional effect is obtained.
the dish which measures 11in.Or 20cm wide is in perfect condition and in its original box,a bonus as the tomobako is fully signed.I would date this to the 1950's or perhaps a little earlier.
as compared to his son whose work is perhaps better known i consider that imaemon xii was better in many respects when it came to more traditional pieces and his body is much purer.

This is a superb example of its type with two sides where the character is bordered by floral sprays, engraving of mind boggling complexity and quality. The third side has an abstract border. This piece came from a major collection in turkey and i had to pay very good money for it but do not regret this as it is far and above the best i have seen.
there are many fakes on ebay.
the silver content is very high and if my dating is correct changing from the hijra to the gregorian calender it dates to 1750 and the border decoration supports this. It measures 1.5in or 4cm. Long and the seal is supported by a tughri the totem of the oghuz tribe from whom the ottomans were descended.

the plate is in excellent order, shows the three spur marks typical of this ware and has a diameter of 16.5in. Or 41.5cm.This is from the same collection as the others and is quite different to the better known canakkale ceramics but is absolutely correct.

This is a very fine and rare piece of niello work, the bracelet has a cushion shaped centre which is a container for either makeup or perfume. It is of small size so would have been a womans.
this piece which i purchased near van from an armenian is very finely done in a technique which seemed to date to the 16th or 17thc and sometimes earlier.Unlike most niello work where the area to be inlaid is carved out in a "v" shape this is notched, the earliest technique used. The wear to the silver and hinges supports a very early date also. The decoration appears to be semi-abstract of scroll work,i cannot work out the main emblem on the container but it does look a bit like two cats.
there is a tiny loss of the niello on one side of the braccelet but apart from that and natural wear the piece is in very good condition.
open the braccelet is approx 6in. Or 13.5cm long although being curved it is actually larger than this.
it could be worn though is more a collectable.

this censer is in the shape of a node of bamboo the handles also similar. The decoration is of a scholar contemplating a waterfall, the reverse a soft distant landscape. The painting is of the very best and being of this early period the piece is unmarked.
the lid is of the finest pierced hexagonal honeycomb and the shoulders are painted with bamboo leaves.

This is an exceptional example of early kyoyaki enamel work decorated with floral sprays on the rounded body with a lappet border on the lower neck and just above the base.
the body is a hard finely levigated one with a very fine even crazing. The foot is beautifully finished and flat.
there is no damage or repairs but some wear to the sparse gilding.
notice the use of purple a very rare colour in the repertoire of kyoto ceramics.
the base bears a stamped ninsei mark and this has confused the fukuoka art museum which has seen some very good photos of the piece.
however to me this is npota concern as all pieces made at the ninsei kiln in the 17th and 18thc were stamped with his mark. Were it not for the more common shape the work is good enough to have been that of ninsei howevver the general opinion is a slightly later work with all the best points of a genuine ninsei piece.
the jar stands 11.5 in. Or 29.5cm. Tall and is approx 6.5 in. At its widest point.
this is probably the best piece of kyoyaki to have come onto the international market in many years.
it has not been exposed to public scrutiny for many years if ever.I bought this privately in new zealand and all the previous owner could tell me was that it had been in the family for many years and a distant relative had spent time in the east which may well have been where it came from.

This is a fine early tiffany favrile vase of large size standing approx 19in.High.It is of a flaring shape wit ha leaf type design up the sides.
however its simplicity is its great gift as the main feature of this piece is its glorious flashes of colour, iridescent blues and reds and subtle glimpses of other colours within the predominant gold. The base is an antiques gilded bronze fully signed on the underside as is the glass at the base with lct favrile hand engraved into the glass.
this is a very early example of this ware where loius comfort tiffany realised his ambition to create the colours which ancient excavated glass carries through the result of chemical changes brought about by the composition of the glass itself combined with a reaction of the soil salts in which it has been buried.
the vase, is amazingly, for a piece of this size, totally undamaged.
an identical example is shown on pg.153 of arts and cafts movement by grange books published in 2002

This is a nice bronze censer dating from the 19thc probably early.Because korean bronzes have a high zinc content they are strictly speaking a type of brass, however the castings such as this take a very good patina because of that.
this is a piece that would have been used in special religious ceremonies and is unlikely to have been privately owned. It is made in at least five separate pieces all cast and then inserted into place and the ends turned over to retain them. The legs appear to have been cast with the body though i could be wrong.
the lid has the eight trigrams of the i ching and the handle to it has five impressions probably representing the five elements of the asian cosmology namely wood fire earth metal and water.
although this piece has seen much use it is in very good condition and stands 7 in, high
