this 100% authentic, original, perfectly intact and repair-free antique chinese ewer is a stunning and wonderful example of the celadon porcelain ceramics (specifically qingbai aka yingqing celadon in this case, denoting a calm and light greenish/blue-grey colored glaze, setting it apart from the more blue and green varieties such as those from the kilns known for making longquan or yaozhou celadon ceramics) created during china's famous song (sung) dynasty 960-1279 ce who were the innovators of the incredibly beautiful family of celadon ceramics known across the world, which were extremely popular while being made at the height of the original celadon wares during the song, yuan, and ming dynasties; also continuing to be made throughout the later qing dynasty and are still being made across china today in modern times. The kiln masters of the song dynasty inspired the arts of countless other cultures, such as the very fine glazed ceramics of the korean contemporaries of the song, the goryeo dynasty of korea.

the ewer available here is a perfect example of the soft qingbai celadon ware created by the song dynasty of imperial china 1000 years ago. The immaculate condition of this piece is quite impressive considering its age of about 700-1,000 years. The lobed or fluted melon-like body is typical of the period, as is the flared arched spout and the small hollow roll at the top of the long, slender strap handle with 2 small notches at its base; the handle's detailed line work design then continuing and flowing down the globular body almost to the very bottom of the ewer in the most exquisite detail. A truly stunning piece of song ceramics.

height: 11 inches

market comparison: a similar piece, lidded but only 7 inches in height, sold at christie's hong kong on october 6, 2015 (sale 3446), just a few months ago, for $13,771.
similar market examples can be provided for any zte item!

provenance: previously sold by the united states' foremost specialist in chinese art, i.M. Chait of beverly hills.

reasonable offers are always considered!

200 year old human skull
rare cranial growth disorder (deformity): scaphocephaly
western european male, likely british
subject born c. 1740-1770 and deceased c. 1800- 1825;

&quot;(pronounced skaf-o-sef-aly; from greek skaphe meaning 'light boat or skiff' and kephale meaning 'head') describes a specific shape of a long narrow head[1] that resembles an inverted boat.
it is a type of cephalic disorder which occurs when there is a premature fusion of the sagittal suture. The sagittal suture joins together the two parietal bones of skull. Scaphocephaly is the most common of the craniosynostosis conditions and is characterized by a long, narrow head.&quot;
(ref: wikipedia; https://en.Wikipedia.Org/wiki/scaphocephaly)

no autopsy performed and was not altered in the style for modern medical study, therefore no punctures, cuts, sutures, wiring or other manipulation post-mortem of any kind. Complete and in perfect condition- never broken or repaired- no glue or any other artificial substance of any kind is present, aside from the expected loss of a few teeth; natural patina expected of 2+ centuries of non-contact indoor aging; highly sought-after medical artifact. The back of skull is elongated due to the condition scaphocephaly (similar to the skull elongations within egypt's thutmosid royal line, including those of tutankhamun and akhenaten, which is attributed to 'dolichocephaly'), it is much more noticeable in person than in photographs and is the reason for the incomparable provenance of this item explained below; come see this extremely interesting medical antiquity currently on display in our la showroom, open to the public 5 days a week!

provenance: records of this skull date as far back as 1825 at which time it was entrusted to the founder of the birmingham medical school of england shortly before the school opened, which was to be one of the first modern surgical and medical graduate colleges in the world and only the 2nd such institution in all of great britain (within a few years the medical school was expanded into a full university, which continues to operate today). The skull was acquired for the inauguration of the medical school to serve as the central display during the festivities of this grand innovation of education and it would become the &quot;main attraction&quot; for both prospective medical students and established academics alike, many of whom came to see a human skull for the first time in their lives. It remained on display for study and viewing at the birmingham university school of medicine for the remainder of its history, as far as we are able to ascertain, until being acquired legally in the united states, via a trusted and accredited dealer of rare artifacts, by the zep tepi emporium in 2015. We here at zte are honored to serve as his home during this current transition until we are able to locate a new permanent resting place.

reasonable offers are always considered.

						This beautifully painted 19th century tibetan thangka- a tibetan painting traditionally made using organic dyes on finely woven cloth of high-grade materials, in this case linen- sits in a wonderfully elegant frame worthy of the piece it protects. Within the outer frame sits a 3-dimensional raised mat board with a fine hand-woven silk cloth decorated with a perfectly designed gold-gilded pattern, a lovely harmonious match for the thangka displayed within its borders.

the central figure of this thangka is the bodhisattva avalokiteshvara who is an earthly manifestation of the celestial amit&Auml;bha buddha, the central revered figure in pure land buddhism. Avalokiteshvara serves as the guardian on and of earth in this current period between the life of shakyamuni, the original buddha (siddartha gautama), and the appearance of the future buddha, 'maitreya' (referred to as 'ajita' in the lotus and amit&Auml;bha sutras). Amit&Auml;bha, translated as 'infinite light,' is accordingly known as 'the buddha of immeasurable life and light' and is one of the most important buddhist figures across many sects of mahayana and vajrayana buddhism, in addition to the pure land buddhism especially dedicated to him, making this wonderfully painted (and rather large by common comparison) thangka of his earthly manifestation, avalokiteshvara, painted in the proper traditional style with all of the 11 heads given to him by the original buddha, not only visually stunning but also a revered and very holy piece of 19th century east asian artwork.

dimensions: image= width 16.5&quot; x height 24&quot; (inner mat boarder); total w/ frame= w 24.5'' x h 31.5&quot;

condition: the frame likely a later addition, early to mid 20th century perhaps, is in excellent condition- the silk mat appears to be entirely blemish-free and only a few light scratches from age exist on the frame. The thangka, being at least 120 years old in which time it has traveled quite a distance, is in wonderful condition despite those facts with all of the splendid details clearly visible. Minor wear due to age is confined to very light fading in areas, some lightly discolored stain-spotting (possibly spot-cleaned several decades ago) mostly towards the edges doesn't effect the overall image and are most visible only when closely examined within a short arm's reach; only a single scratch of approx. 1 inch is visible in the bottom left when facing the piece and is also essentially invisible from a standard viewing distance. This thangka is one of, if not the least, faded/worn/stained piece of its kind that we have had the opportunity to examine. Truly museum quality- not just for its condition and noteworthy size, but most importantly for the detailed and passionate artistry that can only be created by an artist with an unparalleled reverence and respect for the subject of his craft.

a very fine document of the american revolution signed not once but twice by american hero 'sam adams' as well as all of the other 15 members of the council of the massachusetts bay. Adams is signed with all members on the left side and again at the bottom as the secretary of the council. Document is partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 page, oblong folio, signed boston, may 2, 1780; providing for the appointment of manasseh sawyer, esq as second major of the second regiment of the militia in worcester county under josiah whitney, stamped with seal. Manasseh sawyer eventually reached the rank of captain and for over a hundred years after his death his direct relatives remained active in the dar and sar, with one great great grandson becoming a federal judge in the late 19th century. Sawyer came from one of the first families to settle in the american colonies, with his first relative, a great great grandfather, arriving in the colonies in the early 17th century and a few years later was a founding member of a new england town that survives to this day. A truly remarkable historical document.

15 other signers being jeremiah powell, artemas ward, thomas cushing, moses gill, jabez fisher, henry gardner, benjamin white, josiah stone, oliver prescott, abraham fuller, samuel niles, john pitts, aaron wood, joseph simpson, and edward cutts.

condition issues: dampstained but currently stabilized in archival framing; some darkened former fold marks particularly the vertical. To be sold in current archival framing, prohibiting any further deterioration.

						Here we have a silver verge &amp; fusee pair case pocket watch made personally in the early years of his career by the famed english james markwick, jr. Of london (c.1695-1715) late 17th/early 18th century. James markwick jr learned the art of clock making from his father, the also quite famed 17th century clockmaker james markwick who apprenticed under edmund gilpin of the clockmakers company, and after marrying gilpin's only daughter, was freed from the company in 1666. James sr quickly rose through the ranks, with the help of his father-in-law, and became one of the wealthiest private clockmakers in london, moving so far ahead in only one generation as to have gone from a runaway-apprentice clockmaker of no means to being given the rent of an estate by the crown in 1704 and thereby became a member of the english gentry, an enormous leap in standing for a man, who became a gentleman, in the 1660s-90s. In 1692 james jr, being the second but oldest surviving son of james sr under whom he had apprenticed, was freed from his own apprenticeship and a few years later around 1696 james junior was given his father's prosperous shop and trade, quickly making a name of his own in the watchmaking world during the turn of the 18th century, making some of the finest watches in europe and far beyond (as many of his watches would be made for the ottoman market). James jr worked in this manner for nearly twenty years until forming a new company with his son-in-law robert markham, forming the incomparable and still treasured markwick markham watchmaking company, with which james jr worked until his death around 1729. Markwick had become such an incredibly respected famed and honored watch maker that even after his death when robert formed a new alliance, the company became markwick, markham &amp; perigal, not daring sever their company's connection with the name known round the world, and of course keeping the honor of robert father-in-law james jr alive. Robert markham passed in 1741 and his kin and new partners switched the third name several times, but so great was the skill and memory of james markwick jr that his name stayed the first name on the ledger through a half dozen changes of ownership over the next hundred years.

this is a truly one of a kind piece made and twice inscribed by james markwick jr himself, before markham came along, and while james was working tirelessly in his father's london shoppe to create the most beautiful watches available. Here we have a markwick silver key wind pair case pocket watch. Gilt full plate verge &amp; fus&Atilde;&copy;e movement, pierced and engraved balance cock, silver regulation, hybrid pillars, silver champlev&Atilde;&copy; dial with black roman numerals, black outer minute track with outer black arabic five minute markers, beetle and poker hands, polished inner and outer cases, dial and movement both signed. A truly stunning piece. Key still winds but the movement needs a tune up to run smoothly and properly, but everything is there and original. 58mm.

provenance: previously sold via the exclusive 'watches &amp; wristwatches' sale at bonhams london.

						<td>
						An ancient, or antique, korean brown-glazed ceramic vase, a 100% guaranteed authentic piece made nearly 1,000 years ago during the namesake goryeo (aka koryo, koryeo) dynasty of modern-day korea (as the goryeo was the first major imperial dynasty to rule over roughly the same area as defined by the modern boundaries of the korean peninsula from 918- 1392 ce.

a rare and large glazed work of in the classic style of goryeo dynasty stoneware ceramics, undoubtedly authentic to the period period, which was noted for its fine celadon and other high temperature kiln-fired ceramics, using new and innovative artistic techniques many of which were inspired by (but then also expanded upon making a style of ceramics that was uniquely korean) their contemporary chinese neighbors of the song dynasty where the first fine celadon porcelain wares were made that were then and still continue to be some of the most valued ceramics of all time. Like song dynasty china, under goryeo rule korean arts &amp; culture flourished, bringing about great innovations in the arts, particularly in the field of glazed ceramics as shown in extant vessels such as the beautiful and expertly produced example offered herein, which not only had a major, long-lasting impact on fine and decorative arts around the world which continues to influence artists to this day, but were also so finely constructed that we are lucky enough to have pieces like this vase still extant today allowing us to marvel at their beauty, see, and even own them ourselves, just as they would have looked when first made a thousand years ago and thousands of miles away!

height: 11.5 inches

condition: a large crack on one side was professionally repaired, leaving no issues regarding structural integrity today. The old fracture luckily did not chip or shatter and part of the vase so that it was able to be repaired without any false or missing pieces, and as such the piece is complete and appears perfectly shaped as intended; only the outline of the repaired crack is visible when inspected at close distance (at a distance of more than about 1 foot the piece appears as if there was never any damage or repair). Additionally, the repaired crack is only present on one side of the vase, leaving a &quot;display side&quot; available which is stunning and blemish-free. We have generously over-adjusted the list price of this vase, reducing the price far more than what would be typical of the market in respect to the repair, allowing us to offer you this one-of-a-kind ancient korean ceramic at a truly unbeatable price far below that of any other comparable authentic goryeo ceramic-ware, particularly of this stately size, on the market today anywhere!

provenance: formerly of the hashimoto estate, a well-respected and massive private collection, comprised of several thousand authentic ancient to contemporary works of east asian artwork.

						A traditional style of han dynasty, specifically ethnic sichuan or szechuan, chinese reddish-orange terracotta pottery dancing figures, often found in sichuan tombs dating to china's extremely historically important han dynasty- dating from 220 bce to 206 ce (ad) the han dynasty, in the case of the chinese culture, is the bridge between the ancient/archaic era and the modern imperial chinese period, which continued until the early 20th century when &quot;imperial china&quot; ended with the revolution which seized power from the then ruling qing dynasty. No damage or repairs are visible on either piece. Mineral deposits and wear typical of terracotta sculpture of this age are present. The woman and man are shown mid-dance, both with their right arms raised, as is typical of this style of dancing figure sculpture, with the woman wearing a tripartite floral headdress and the curved headdress of a han dynasty gentleman on the male figure; both wearing floor-length robes. A beautiful and very large example of han dynasty sichuan pottery.

pictured here is an authentic ancient greek (magna graecia) pyxis vessel with concentric bands atop its fitted lid, finished in a cr&Atilde;&uml;me buff typical of the pottery found in the classical period towns and villages along the southern italian tarentine gulf region, continuing along the ionian and adriatic coastlines as well as throughout modern-day sicily. These achaean, ionic, doric, and hellenistic greek settlers of that southern italian region brought their stellar arts along with them, such as the incredible ceramics which inspired awe throughout the peoples of the ancient world and continues to inspire the same awe in the artists and cultures across the world today, nearly 3000 years later. The advanced forms of hellenistic visual and performing arts undoubtedly played a special role in the formation of the rich culture of the soon-to-be roman empire, which would dominate the same territory a few hundred years later. The terracotta pyxis vessel available here, priced well below market along with all zte artifacts, is 100% authentic and intact, with only one small crack repaired on a side of the vessel w/ no loss of structural integrity, a beautiful remnant of the hellenistic culture which left its mark across the ancient world.

						Egyptian green glazed faience ushabti: of typical mummiform, wearing a tripartite wig, false beard and arms crossed over the body holding farming implements in each hand and a seed bag over left shoulder for use while performing labor for its owner in the afterlife- the ushabti would be buried in the owner's tomb so that when called upon to perform daily manual labor in the afterlife by osiris, the ushabti would be able to do the work in its owner's place, giving the deceased individual an afterlife of luxury. antique late 19th century bronze japanese okimono of the immortal mythical figure of sennin who appears standing on rockery, one leg raised in the traditional fashion of sennin depictions, and holding a gourd that is releasing a dragon which he holds like a staff in his hands(often also depicted in wooden japanese netsuke). The figure is in excellent condition and has only one very minor repair in the middle of the long thin staff he is holding, which is securely attached to the sennin in two places, and had a small fracture in the middle which was repaired without any alteration to the appearance and reinforced the strength of the piece; it is not visible unless very closely inspected. The piece is in impeccable condition overall and was constructed with an extremely fine attention to detail. It is a truly museum-quality example of 19th century japanese bronze okimono art.

sennin, a word from middle chinese meaning &quot;the immortal one&quot; and the corresponding japanese tale of gama sennin, are derived from a 10th century chinese fable in which an alchemist named liu hai seeks out chan chu, the three-legged money toad (popularly used today in feng shui applications), and from the toad learns the secrets of immortality. The immortal sennin is now popular throughout japanese culture.
