						Magnificent late 19th century neoclassical revival extending leather top table, of monumental proportions and exceptional craftsmanship, by howard and sons of london, circa 1870s.

the table is made of solid dense mahogany throughout, which indicates it exceptional quality. It has the extending top with two leaves, and two drop leaves at either side; the writing surface is beautifully lined with green antiqued leather; the borders are crossbanded in satinwood and finely decorated with griffins and scrolling foliage inlay in various fine exotic veneers. The frieze is crisply fluted and decorated with marquetry insets. All the marquetry is of the finest quality, beautifully enriched with exquisite penwork decoration. Raised on four finely fluted square tapering and collared legs, terminating in original brass castors.

stamped howard and sons berners st. Twice, and retains the manufacturer's label reading: 'easy chair and sofa factory howard and sons upholsterers berners street london patent dining tables'

the table has three positions: fully extended (with both extra leaves) - measures 200 cm long with flaps down and 245 cm with flaps up; part-extended (with one leaf) - 150 cm / 195 cm; fully contracted - 100 cm / 145 cm.

stunning piece, very rare in this imposing size and exhibition quality. Excellent antique condition. The piece is certainly made for an exhibition or a very specific commission, possibly for the institutional use (in a library, town or guild hall).

though howard and sons are now best known for their armchairs, their legacy includes many more of the finest pieces made in the 19th century. Founded in 1820 by john howard, the firm operated at berners street since 1848, supplying fine furnishings for many important houses such as sudbury hall and elton hall. Their work is in the royal collection, and the queen&acirc;&euro;&trade;s private collections at sandringham and balmoral, as well as the collection of the victoria and albert museum. At the crystal palace exhibition in 1862 the firm's suite of library furniture won a gold medal, and further awards at the international exhibitions in 1878 in paris, in 1894 (antwerp) and 1900 (paris).

						</td>
						<td>
						A very fine george iii sheraton period serpentine fronted chest of drawers in mahogany, almost certainly by gillows of lancaster and london.

english, circa 1785-1790.

the serpentine shaped top, veneered in beautifully figured mahogany and crossbanded in tulipwood, with boxwood and ebony line stringing, above the four long graduated book-veneered drawers, retaining the original brass ring handles; the top drawer mahogany lined, fitted with partitions and lidded compartments beneath a baize-lined writing or brushing slide. The front is flanked by slim canted corners; the shaped moulding runs along the bottom edge, the whole is raised on four slender downswept bracket feet. The backboard is triple-panelled, treated with red wash, as often seen on high-quality furniture of the 18th century.

the form of this chest conforms to a design for a dressing commode by gillows of lancaster, no. 11.108, dated 3.11.1789, made by thomas briscoe for the london shop (see l.Boynton, gillow furniture designs from 1760 to 1800, plate 117). It is described in their estimete sketch book as having a 'framed back' and 'a slide on the top drawer, covered with green cloth', hence closely related to the present piece.

the striking resemblance of the present chest to the gillows' drawings, as well as a number of constructional and design features, common with the documented examples, including the elegant outswept feet, referred to by gillows as 'french' feet, and a triple-panelled backboard, make this attribution to the gillows firm fairly certain. The present piece's exceptional quality, smart choice of veneers and pleasing proportions are also typically associated with the gillows' oeuvre.

a closely related example, stamped gillows, but with a more modest bow front (see l.Boynton, gillow furniture designs, plate 118), was sold at christie's south kensington, 24 may 2011, lot 317. For further related serpentine-fronted example attributed to gillows, see bonhams, 11 march 2015, lot 95; and sotheby's, 15 may 2014, lot 308.

established in the early 18th century, gillows of lancaster are among the few most celebrated english furniture makers, famed for their use of fine timbers and exceptional quality of craftsmanship.

						<td>
						A very fine set of six george iii chippendale period carved mahogany dining chairs of superb quality and generous proportions.

english, circa 1765

each having a molded serpentine crestrail, carved with foliate scrolls to each eared corner and an acanthus clasp to the centre, over a pierced vasiform splat of a particularly pleasing broad proportions, carved with acanthus sprays and scrolls and flanked by shaped and molded uprights, above the drop-in seat covered in vintage green velvet, within the channelled seat rails, raised on square chamfered and channelled legs united by an h-stretcher.

made of solid and dense well-figured honduras mahogany, beautifully patinated to a warm golden colour, crisply carved with foliate motifs. Back seat rails stamped ig, which is most likely, the chairmaker&acirc;&euro;&trade;s initials; incised variously with roman numerals i to vi, with original drop-in seats correspondingly numbered.

similar stamps of the journeymen&acirc;&euro;&trade;s initials are often found on chairs from the workshop of giles grendey (1693-1780) of clerkenwell, london. <td>
						A very fine quality regency period figured rosewood and brass-mounted sofa table, in the manner of william trotter of edinburgh.

english or scottish, circa 1820

the rectangular twin-flap top with rounded corners and beaded edge decoration, the flaps supported on carved scroll tulip decorated swinging end supports, above a pair of frieze drawers with opposing faux drawers, on a central tapering column support with an ornate gilt brass collar, above the concave-sided quarter form base with over-scrolled foliage-carved and paterae-mounted sabre legs, terminating in original hairy paw-shaped brass capping and castors.

notably, the top is veneered in finely figured rosewood without sapwood, which points out to an expensive piece.

the piece's elegant design and decorative features echo the style of william trotter of edinburgh, who rivalled the london furniture makers of the day and supplied very fine pieces to prominent scottish households. Exquisite craftsmanship, smart choice of veneers and the use of the finely engraved brass mounts and caster capping suggest that the piece was made by a highly skilled cabinetmaker, for a wealthy person with sophisticated taste.

						<td>
						A very fine regency period simulated rosewood and brass inlaid library tub berg&Atilde;&uml;re, of klismos form, attributed to william wilkinson of ludgate hill, london.

english, circa 1815.

the open beech show frame, dark grained to simulate rosewood, caned throughout, having the scrolled tablet crest rail, inset with brass-inlaid reserve of rosewood, above the volute scroll carved arm supports, over moulded and brass inlaid seat-rails, the whole raised on sabre legs, terminating in the original brass castors. The down-filled squab cushion covered in tan leather.

this design of this armchair derives from the antique grecian klismos chair, having distinctively curved front and back legs, favoured by thomas hope, possibly the most extravagant regency designer and arts patron, and george smith, whose published furniture designs became highly influential in the regency period.

the firm of wilkinson can be traced to its establishment at the start of the last decade of the 18th century by thomas and william wilkinson. In 1808 william had established his own successful business on ludgate hill and had commissions from amongst other august patrons, goldsmiths hall in the city.

provenance: christie&acirc;&euro;&trade;s, london, 6 july 1989, lot 26.

closely related related armchairs in mahogany are in the duke and duchess of devonshire collection at chatsworth.

for nearly identical pair of armchairs, stamped 'wilkinson ludgate hill, 2257' see sotheby&acirc;&euro;&trade;s, london, 6 july 2011, lot 130 (realised &Acirc;&pound;33,650)
