Superb 18th C French & Indian War Map Of North America RHODE, I.C., Theatrum belli in America Septentrionali [with inset of Fort Frederick/Crown Point], Circa:1761. 22 More »
Superb 18th C French & Indian War Map Of North America RHODE, I.C., Theatrum belli in America Septentrionali [with inset of Fort Frederick/Crown Point], Circa:1761. 22 1/4†x 31 1/2â€. Two sheets, joined. Copper-engraving with original hand color. This is the second state of Rhode’s rare Theatrum Belli, one of the most important maps for the French & Indian War published in Germany. It was originally issued c.1755 without the inset, which was added to this second state after Fort Frederick’s capture by the British in 1759 when it was renamed “Crown Point.†The map depicts in great detail the English colonies from Pimlico Sound to Nova Scotia, plus eastern Canada, the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley. The map’s obscurity is surprising as it is unquestionably one of the finest, if not the finest, map of the French and Indian War published in any country other than the belligerent nations. For this reason, Rhode’s map occupies a unique niche as it is neutral in its detail, while the maps published in France and England were created to advance their claims. The map testifies that interest in the conflict in America was widespread throughout Europe, where it was seen as just one theatre of the greater Seven Years War. That Rhode chose to give his map a Latin title suggests that he intended it for a wider market than Germany. According to Brown, the map was “engraved and printed in Germany, possibly for inclusion in a general atlas of the world. However, the two copies examined, one in the Library of Congress and the other in the William Clements Library, are in separate form.†No atlas that includes the map has been located and relatively few copies have survived; it seldom appears on the market. Brown praises the map as “one of the earliest attempts to indicate the topography of the Ohio Valley and and the surrounding country as well as the dense forests and mountain ranges. The use of fine shading and hachures to indicate relief is unusual for the period...†Rhode seems to differentiate between the settled and unsettled regions of America through the use of forests in relief, and shows a great savannah along the banks of the Wabash and Illinois rivers. The inset of Crown Point has been adapted from the corresponding plate in Le Rouge’s Recueil des Plans del’Amerique Septentrionale, Paris, 1755. References: Lloyd Brown, Early Maps of the Ohio Valley, #23; Sellers & Van Ee, Maps & Charts of North America & the West Indies 1750-1789, #59; Tooley, Dictionary of Mapmakers, p. 536. THE FIRST MAP TO SHOW PITTSBURGH (FORT DU QUESNE) VAN KEULEN, GERARD, Carte de la Nouvelle France on se voit le cours des Grandes Rivieres de S.Laurens & Mississippi... chez More »
THE FIRST MAP TO SHOW PITTSBURGH (FORT DU QUESNE) VAN KEULEN, GERARD, Carte de la Nouvelle France on se voit le cours des Grandes Rivieres de S.Laurens & Mississippi... chez la Veuve de Jo. van Keulen & Fils..., 1720/1755. 22 3/4†x 39â€. Two sheets joined. Copper-engraving with original outline and spot color. The rare second edition of van Keulen’s two-sheet map of North America, which first appeared in 1720. This edition has numerous changes to the plate including the addition of several French forts west of the Allegheny Mountains. One of these is Fort du Quesne, which became the city of Pittsburgh. Established in 1754, this edition of the map was published the next year, making this the first map known to name the fort. The map is significant as the only land map of America issued by the powerful publishing firm of Van Keulen, which produced some of the most important sea charts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Ambitious in both scope and detail, the map encompasses more territory than traditional French maps of Canada, extending west through New Mexico, where French claims reach the Rio Grande. Legends record information on settlements, forts, Indian tribes, and routes and trails used in exploration. There are two large inset maps showing the Louisiana Gulf coast and the mouth of the Mississippi River. Only eight British colonies are indicated. Information from De Fer and De L’Isle on the Great Lakes and Mississippi has been refined and recorded here in more elaborate detail. This rare second edition of the map can be dated with certainty from the information within the cartouche, Chez la Veuve de Jo. van Keulen & Fils, which only appears on maps published in 1755. While the first edition is a great rarity; this second edition is almost unknown. Gerard was the son of Johannes Van Keulen by his first marriage and arguably the most talented member of the family. “He was a skilful engraver and proficient in mathematics and navigational science. Gerard was responsible for establishing the scientific basis of the firm of Van Keulen. His father had lacked the qualifications to make a personal contribution in the scientific field,†-- Koeman. In 1704 Gerard joined the bookseller’s guild and ten years later was appointed Hydrographer to the powerful Dutch East India Company -- an honor that was never bestowed upon his father. “Gerard gave a new impetus to the firm. Unfortunately he did not live long, dying prematurely when he was 49.†He was succeeded in business by his widow Ludwina, and later by his son, Johannes II. The firm would remain in the Van Keulen family until 1823 -- 145 years after its founding. References: Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici IV, p. 387; Sellers & Van Ee, #178 (which incorrectly dates the map at 1782). Suggested Retail: $29,000. A serious offer will get a response! KLINGER, C. ABEL, THE EARTH published by C. Abel Klinger in NUREMBERG, 1852. 3†diameter pocket globe in good condition. Original paper case without lid. Pocket globes originated in England and were the most popular in that country. Their use is still somewhat a mystery, but these charming objects were probably expensive novelties or gentleman’s toys, useful for instruction and good conversation pieces. This mid-nineteenth century pocket globe was published in Nuremberg, but has names and title in English. References: Dekker & Van der Krogt, p.106; Dekker, Globes at Greenwich, pp. 365-368.
