1820 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Wrigley
Price: $1450.00
George IV, dated 1820 1820 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Wrigley. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with chipboard backing and brown paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours magenta, light blue, light brown, gold, light green, green and black. Verse titled ''On the Death of a Child'' reads ''See where the expiring Infant lies,> And list''ning Angels wait to bear> Their sister spirit to the skies,> To dwell with them in glory there.> Tis-done Farewell thy pangs are o''er> No more thy throbbing breast I hear,> Thy fluttering pulse shall beat no more,> Nor anguish swell the falling tear.> Cropp''d like a rose before tis'' blown,> By northsome damps or piercing air,> No more thy lisping tongue shall own> A Mothers Love A Fathers care.> Sweet babe I envy now thy lot> On life''s rough sea''s thus left to sail> Whilst thou art safe to harbour brought> Beyon''d the reach of every gale.''. Signed and dated ''Sarah Wrigleys Work 1820''. A wonderful set of motifs, including a country estate mansion house, with gamekeeper''s house and animals grazing in the grounds, birds, posy, flowers, fruit basket and potted flowering plants. Good. A couple of places where the ground is wearing thin. A few small stains, and uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses. Some colours are slightly faded. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung ''as is''. Gilt slip is worn. 17.25ins by 12.25ins wide
